Will unlocking with subsidy code help my V8?

Hi all,

I have just went from Verizon to Suncom. I know this is not a commonly popular switch, but where I work at, I cannot get any mobile internet access unless I switch over to the "new" nationwide plan. I do not like the idea of allowing Verizon to charge me by the data downloaded/uploaded. As a matter of fact, I think Verizon is getting too fat for their wallets.
Anyway, getting back to the story. There are multiple GSM AT&T towers on my way to work and I have no coverage with Verizon for about half of my travel each day to/from work. AT&T is like Verizon now trying to shaft you in fees, not to mention their constant drop calls, so I thought Suncom was a wise choice so I could take advantage of AT&T's GSM towers.
I got the Motorola Razr2 V8 and love the phone. However, I seem to have a problem with the phone in a lot of areas not wanting to pick up on AT&T towers. The phone has a subsidy lock on it, as I tried to put in a prepaid AT&T sim card in it and it prompted me for the subsidy lock code.
My question is that if I got the subsidy lock code and unlocked it, would this help the reception problem I am having. I know phones are programmed to perform so when you are traveling from point A and point B, the phone will try to hang on the cell tower in the area of point A while traveling toward/to point B. Then when you travel back from point B to point A, it will try to hang on to the signal from tower in the area of point B. But there are stretches of roadway where my phone goes into Emergency Only/No Service mode when I travel to work. When I get near my work location, it will capture and hold on to various AT&T towers. Then, when I leave work and come home, my phone will hang on to all those AT&T towers and keep the signal until I get back into Suncom territory and instantly, it will switch over to Suncom. I don't understand why it won't pick up on the AT&T towers when it goes into the Emergency Only/No Service mode on my way to work, but it will have the AT&T signal in the exact same area on my way home from work.
Hence my question: Will unlocking my phone help my reception problem?
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance and/or advice.

unlocking won't help you. unlocking only allows you to use another carrier's SIM (TMobile for example) in your phone. It won't allow you to connect to another carrier using your AT&T SIM. In some areas you may to able to roam to another carrier, but that is not related to whether or not the phone is locked.
