So upgrading and need advice Moto Z9 Vs. Razr v9

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Lone Knight

So my original razr finally died and now I need to pick a new phone to use. I narrowed it down to the z9 and the v9 or maybe even the lg shine but I'm not sure what to get. They seem to be identical even with the same weird red color that moto likes to use now. The only major differences I've found was that the z9 has flash, gps, and video sharing. I like the clamshell form factor but I could use a slider too. If only motorola made a new phone that was like the v80 I would get that right away.

bump c'mon help me out.

Get the Z9 if you don't care about thickness.

Z9 all the way..

Posted by: Q Ball

Z9 has the bigger BX50 battery to begin with and maybe room for something slightly bigger (that's what I'm looking in to).

I have had the V9 before (both AT&T branded and unlocked/unbranded), and have one again now. It's a great phone if you like flip/clamshell phones. The RF is amazing, sound quality is clear and natural, and it's the best-built flip phone I have ever used. It is my first choice when I want something a little more casual than my daily-driver BlackBerry.

I had a Z9 for roughly five hours. It's very well built, and is an excellent phone...but I found the RF to be spotty (compared to the stellar V9), call quality was "ok", the latest version of the Synergy OS was cool, and it has a bigger screen than the V9... and I was left totally underwhelmed. I will admit that I am not a fan of "slider" phones, and that was the main reason I took it back for a refund...but I just didn't "feel" the phone at all. It was also quite heavy, which I usually like...but it felt almost overly so for some reason, to me.

Both are good mobile phones...but for the same money, IMHO the V9 is the clear winner!!

The V8/9's all look great, but the battery life is my main concern. The screen on the device could have been bigger as well...

I've never had an issue with battery life on either phone.

Posted by: Lone Knight

What about the rokr v6? I like the orange/black color of it but it doesn't have as good specs as the v9.

Posted by: blackengaard

Don't get the Shine.
Take my word.

I don't have a Z9, but this is just what I've seen around.

Pros of the V9:
-Better, stronger reception than the Z9 from what I hear
-Two big screens
-Flip form factor (if you like that)
-Touch screen controls...oooooh.

Cons of the V9:
-Horrible battery life (I have to charge mine every night, but I get used to it)
-Large front screen is kinda useless except for music
-Kinda faulty sometimes, restarts and freezes, but hey what Motorola phone didn't do that

Pros of the Z9:
-Slider form factor (again, if you like that)
-GPS
-Bigger screen (.2" bigger)
-Animated menus
-Camera w/ flash

Cons of the Z9
-Horrible keypad
-Hard to text with
-Not as good call quality/reception as the V9

This is just off the top of my head about complaints and good points about both phones.

I hope that helped?

*Battery life of the V9 is not horrible on the V9. If you are in a 3G-friendly area, and use a large amount of data...then expect to charge regularly, but if your usage is mainly as a phone and not a data processor...expect over two days of charge. That is pretty good for a such a slim form phone (& slim battery by default) that has 3G capability. Actually it's better than some other 3G phones out there.

*I have had three V9's in my history...and I have never, ever had a single incident where the phone froze or restarted...not once. As a matter of fact, it has been one of the most bug-free phones I've ever had.

YMMV of course, but...

Mine is terrible. After about 2 days of having it, I have to charge it every night and sometimes it'll even go dead when I'm out and about around 8 PM.
I also force my phone onto GSM, not 3G sot that's even a bigger concern.

My phone often restarts itself when I try and text and have music playing at the same time.
=/

Might just be me, but I'm not sure.

You have a faulty phone and/or a bad battery. Exchange it.

Actually, even with the V8, many of my customers have been having trouble keeping the device charged. 3G would just kill the device faster...

I forgot to add something.
I text about ~16000 a month, which boils down to a rough estimate of 530 texts a day...

That would probably have an effect on the battery.

I'm not sure though.

Uh...yeah.

Data is data...3G or not.

If you are texting 530 times a day...you ought to be thankful that you have the battery life that you do, and not whine about your having to charge nightly. Do you have a day job?

But...if your phone is freezing and/or rebooting randomly...I would certainly exchange it if you're within your 30-day grace period.

wouldn't having a day job and talking to clients drain the V9's battery faster? I don;t understand the low blow regarding the day job

Not a low blow...not referring to you. Don't be so easily offended...sheesh!!

I was making a comment regarding the 500+ texts the poster made daily. I find it hard to believe that that number could be accomplished while working for an employer on a daily basis.

I'm not offended, sir. I just have no idea what you were trying to prove, or has proven for that matter.

My V9 has the BX50 too. The V9 isn't going to win any prizes on battery life with its 2 screens though.

Posted by: abcrndm

wow, 530 texts/day is an incredible amount...i don't do that in a month! but yeah, if you do that many a day i'm surprised it even lasts a full day.

Cause 16000 texts/month = 530 texts/day = 1 text every 2 minutes in an 18 hr day.

Posted by: blackengaard

I don't text constantly, though I do text alot.
Keep in mind that 530/ a day is send AND receive.
And it also includes when my email is forwarded to me.
Those are big messages and probably count for around five or so messages, because they're 763KB in size, and regular texts are only 187KB in size.

But there's still the part where it randomly reboots.
It actually did it this morning; I was trying to play a ringtone to hear how it would sound, but it just restarted when clicked on it.

Are you still in your 30-day grace period for an exchange?

If so (guess I'll risk repeating ad nauseum)...take it back. That is not normal.

I have had several of the phones...and have never had a reboot.

=/
My 30 day period ended yesterday.
But it's refurb that I got from Warranty Exchange.
Does that make a difference?

And it's interesting that you haven't had a reboot before because all my Motorola phones did this, even my numerous V3xx's.

Do you have a memory card in your phone?

Contact AT&T warranty division...whether it's a refurb or not, it's still under warranty.

I have had numerous Motos, just the V-series are...V505, V551, V600, V635,V3, V3i, V3xx, V9/ATT, V9/unbranded-HK variant, and V8/unbranded-HK & Euro variants...and not a single reboot or freezing issue...not one. As a matter of fact, I tend to keep a Moto around as a backup simply because of how reliable they have been for me...

Maybe I have had the world's largest number of flukes.

And, yes...I use a 2gb SanDisk MicroSD card.

Goodness.
I've only had the V551, the V3, the V3xx, and now the V9.
Not a SINGLE one?
That's amazing.

Either that or my phones just suck.
Hmm.
I use Kingstons.

I have a Z9, and chose this over the V9.

Size: Z9 closed is bigger than V9 closed, though smaller open. Slightly larger screen (however, only one). I consider the larger size a plus, but then again, I'm not the benchmark by which to measure (I realize this). Additionally, the V9 felt like most other razrs: thin to the point of fragility. The Z9 ain't much better, but it's got a bit more solid feel.

The button size, for me, is not an issue--with the exception of when I installed the "clip-on" case. Then, accessing the number 1 got a little tight, but still manageable.

GPS on the Z9 is a nice feature, though I wish it had the functionality of being able to import addresses from contact list (if it CAN do this, I haven't figured out how to make it so).

Main drawback to the Z9 I see thus far is that MPT doesn't really recognize it yet --aside from other standard Motorola irks.

Ah! We finally got back on topic.
=/

Sorry we like threadjacked this.
Anyways.
I think there's a software called SyncCell where you can Sync your contacts and your calendar.

I just used the trial version and it works okay.
Granted, it leaves a note on every contact saying "Created by SyncCell...blahblahblah..." But hey. It saved me like an hour of my time.

Good to know about SyncCell. Thanks! --but I was speaking of the TeleNav being able to import postal addresses from a contact. I think it'd be nice to highlight someone's contact, scroll to their postal address and have "drive to," (or something similar) as an option...

Hmm I'm not sure.
I've never used TeleNav/AT&T Navigator so I have no idea.
Sorry!
