Backing up your BB

Hey guys,

Here is another question that I am curious about. I did a search and didnt really come up with anything.

When backing up a BB, with the BB software, can you actually access your number/schedule etc...?

Reason i'm asking is because one of my friends has a BB and cannot seem to find a way to access anything via PC...just can restore or backup.

I'm coming from a palm, so the palm software is pretty user friendly when it comes down to informational aspects.

Thanks guys!

The backups via the Desktop Manager can ONLY be used by the Desktop Manager to restore your device. You, the user, can be selective in the restore but getting into the data is not an option. There is no PIM, like Palm, built into the Desktop Manager.

Outlook is your window into your "number/schedule"

I would LOVE to see RIM come out with it's own PIM but the Blackberry was spawned from corporate goo and they all live on Outlook!

That pretty much answers it. Syncing to Outlook is effectively another backup.

get a mac, i call see all my stuff when it syncs with ical and such

i guess outlook would do the same on a PC bypassing the need to drop $1500 on a mac

The Palm desktop is a pretty decent basic PIM. It would be nice if RIM had the same, but I guess the thinking here is, why develop something new when most people already have some sort of PIM software.

is there a way to get some type of software for the PC that will recognize the backup file and you can maybe access the backup through your PC?

What?

No! As I said in my previous post, Outlook is your best/only choice. The backup file is only for use by the Desktop Manager for restore purposes. There is no software that uses the backup file in it's PIM.

Think Outlook!

seriously...

My friend does have outlook on his PC, what steps need to be taken to view the BB backup on Outlook?

You would need to install the Desktop Software that comes with your Blackberry and do a sync with Outlook. This would import all of your contacts, calendar, tasks and etc into Outlook. I use it maily for an extra backup as I seldom use Outlook except for this purpose.
