Outlook email through Blackberry

I am researching Blackberry's for my company. We do not have nor are we going to get a Blackberry Enterprise Server. We use Exchange 2003. Can we get email on the Blackberry using OWA (outlook web access) without having to keep your PC turned on and Outlook open? I haven't been able to find any detailed information on that. Does it load up in a web page on the device? And if so, can you use this as your default email on the device? Will you be notified automatically when you get a new message or will you have to open a web page and check your owa to find out if you have mail? Thanks for any help.

yes you can get your mail delivered w/o having to keep your computer on. no you will not have to open owa to check, it will alert you when you receive a new message.

How can you get your work email delivered from an exchange server without blackberry redirector? I thought the whole point of BES (well, 2 points the other being the syncing of everything besides email) was to do an activesync with exchange and the blackberry.

You can do it, but IMHO, you wont like it. You can use the carrier's BIS service on each account and access exchange via IMAP or POP3. You will not get reconciliation between exchange and the BB. You will also not be able to wirelessly sync contacts, calendars, notes, etc. If you are going to spend the money on the devices, why not build a BES server. The blackberry "soluton" is not just the device, but the BES server and integration to Exchange (Notes or Groupwise).

Oh and by the way, if you want to use the email client built into the device, you MUST get a BB dataplan on every device.

Oh. You'd go through IMAP or POP3. Got it. Since we switched over to Exchange it's annoying that the blackberry redirector doesn't send attachments. I always got attachments when we just had a generic email server using IMAP.

I never recommend using redirector to anyone, other than my worst enemies. Not a good solution for anything other than causing much stress and many problems.

BIS can also access Exchange mail via OWA.

I know people are most familiar with their email client but BES and BIS don't interact with your email client. It doesn't matter if you use Outlook, Thunderbird, Eudora or whatever. The mail server is what matters.

It accesses your mail via OWA but you don't access the OWA site on the BB. You specify the OWA URL and account credentials with BIS. Your mail arrives in Messages and/or to its own icon on your home screen like any other mail account integrated with BIS. All your integrated email accounts are managed via your carrier's BIS site. No need to leave a PC running which is preferable.

Any email account can be set as the default.

You can have notifications for any email account integrated with BIS -- or no notifications at all.

Do not use Redirector or Mail Connector.

There are a number of methods. BES, BIS/OWA, BIS/POP, BIS/IMAP, forwarding, etc etc.

Activesync is an MS product. Maybe you mean Activesync as an analogy for BES? It's still not quite the same thing though. The "whole point" of BES is to integrate your company's BB's with their Exchange accounts, to offer centralized device management tools and to integrate your BB's with your corporate intranet.

I highly recommend that the OP check into BES as well. People underestimate the importance of the back end. The BB is really just one piece of the solution. BIS is ok for personal and very small business use but there is a lot of added functionality with BES.

Can you get attachments via BIS/OWA?

Also, I did mean to use activesync as an analogy but I meant it as doing a synchronization with the exchange server.

BIS/OWA delivers attachments.

BIS/OWA also does some syncing from the BB back to the OWA... read or delete a message and it will show that on the OWA too. At least that's how it worked when I last used it a year ago.

I only set it up via BIS for short periods of time when I was out of the office because at work we change our password every 30 days and if I forget to logon to BIS and change it there, my account would get locked out at work. May not be an issue for you depending on password policies.

Hi:

I am new to the Blackberry serivice and am bit confused. I am currently with ATT and currenlty thinking about getting a Blackberry device for my personal use. I would like to access my work email which is Microsoft Exchange 2003 with Service Pack 2 according to our IT person. All the ATT data plan description describe the "BlackBerry Personal" plan is for BIS and cannot access corporate email, one must use the "BlackBerry Enterprise" plan for corporate email access. But my company does not have the Blackberry Enterprise Server. According to the posts above, I should be able to have the ATT "BlackBerry Personal" plan to access BIS which access through Outlook Web Access to get my work email. Is this correct?

Thanks.

Wlo8, that is correct. You can use Outlook Web Access on BIS.

Hi, thanks. I assuming this is correct regardless of the carrier one has.
