I just received an email from AT&T about a promotion starting tomorrow. Here’s the info:

We are excited to announce that we will be launching another iPhone Refurb sale!

iPhones are now sold out and are on back-order online. However, your customers will be able to purchase a refurbished iPhone online at AT&T for only $250!

This promotion is valid from Wednesday, May 14th through Friday, May 16th (while supplies last).

You can purchase the iphone without a contract. You agree to the 2 year contract when you activate through itunes.

If you live in Canada, $500 is a good price. Even if you drive to US to pick one up, you pay $399+tax+gas+canada tax

You can buy one from AT&T, online or in a corporate store. The only difference (that I encountered) is ,in store, they do a credit check and set up a phone number that is not activated until you go through the iTunes activation. If you get one online, the credit check wouldn't occur until activation.

If you jailbreak/unlock it, you can completely bypass activating the assigned number and being on contract. There's plenty of info in the "iPhone Hacking and Unlocking" thread explaining how to do this. I did it and my iPhone is unlocked, on T-Mobile and working just fine.

they arent on there, just because someone said this was going to happen, dosent mean it will 100% remember alot of people are attention getters...iphone is hot right now, so why not make up a website and post phony news and link everyone too it (not saying Op is doing that).

It's there, I see it.

Something to keep in mind on these refurbs (we went through this last time they came around):

1) Store employees with stock, will quite likely want to open a line/run a check on you. This started happening all the time during the last batch of refurbs. Which then brought all the stomping and whining - but keep this in mind, an AT&T store has no obligation to sell you anything if they don't want to. So if they want to run a check on you, be prepared to agree to the check or leave empty-handed.

If you are an existing customer, you can just give them your phone number and tell them you are going to port over your girlfriend's/boyfriend's/mother's/father's line from another carrier - and you need to do that with them.

2) These "refurbs" are NOT actually refurbed by Apple - it is done by AT&T. They appear to have been wiped down with a cloth, and had the "Erase all data" option triggered. In some cases, they have shown up quite used - so if you are getting one in-store, look at it first!

3) Once you get your refurb, immediately check your warranty date in Apple's online tool (I think there's a link to that in the article above as well). Since AT&T is basically cleaning it up, wiping off the data, and selling it again - it's quite likely the warranty clock started many many months ago on the unit you have. Apple will reset this clock for you, but only if you fax in your receipt.

thats just if your gunna use at&t for your service provider, and want one of their "iPhone" plans.

You don't have to. You can take it to the store and do "pay as you go" with AT&t, or do the unlock, jailbreak thing if you want.

yes it will allow u to keep your current plan & NOT require you to extend your contract.

Officially, I believe the policy is that prepaid options are only available if you fail the credit check with AT&T.

I ordered a 16GB, but I have a feeling I am going to have trouble. I am an AT&T customer, out of contract, but I am not going to sign a new agreement until the 3G iphone comes out. I will just pop my current sim in this phone and unlock/jailbreak it. I wonder if they will lose their mind if this IMEI pops up as "in use" but not tied to a contract?

what happens if you had an iphone and sold it a few months back. I kept the iphone data plan so I just sold the hardware and kept my sim card. If I get the refurb do I just plug in my sim card and go on and activate it? Its similar to getting a replacement iphone I guess.

Refurbs wouldn't bother me. With Apple you can go to the Genius Bar and swap it if you have any problems. Then you'll get either another refurb (that's been Apple refurbished rather than AT&T refurbished) or new iPhone (luck of the draw).

The warranty part is true IF you active your iPhone through ATT. If you JB and activate it through other means, they will not reset the warranty.

FWIW, my ATT refurb that i got the first time around is perfect!

If I were on T-Mo, I would order one of these and JB it immediately because second gen prolly won't be compatible with T-Mo 3G bands and it will prolly take some time to hack (but I have nothing to support this claim, it's just my gut feeling).

If you notice, they are doing this a little early to make sure that you are out of the 30 day window when the new Iphone is out . I personally am going to wait until the 3G version is out. I have waited this long.

I with verizon - off contract now and will wait to activate it and switch over to AT&T until The Iphone 2 comes out in June, and see if they have any discounts off them for new customers (as rumored). If they do, I will buy the new one, sell this on ebay or give it to my son for his birthday. This is a great price for this phone!

I am fully aware that there will be a new version coming out...however, at this price, there is no way I am passing on it...backup phones are good to have, and so are phones that can be unlocked and jailbroken for sale on eBay. There's always someone, somewhere looking to purchase!!!

ordered! I got a 8gig, at this price its hard not to go back to the iphone (i have a blackberry right now) and save 10-15 a month on data, plus have my ipod with me...also I can sell it when 2nd gen comes out and get the new one and invest about 100bucks I would assume....not bad

True true. I should have finished my statement, they'd be able to use it, I meant the lack of our 1700 band for 3G. So, in the mean time they can use a refurbed gen1

I agree because I think if the second gen comes out and has better features (which it will i hope) everyone going to be over hype with that version and 1gen would not be as popular.
Since I had already had a iphone, I want one to replace it and if the second gen comes out, i can give it to my dad. but it's all about the money.

well... i figured it this way...

i just bought a 8b touch for $260 new on ebay never opened.

i now have a 8gb iphone for $250 shipped..

figure might as well include the phone for $10 less ( and resell the itouch). i can deal with the extra data plan i guess, and then just use it as a ipod when the new one surfaces

I'm not really into the first gen iPhone since I know too many people who have it already and I see one everytime I am out in the public.

But this seems like a great deal if you are coming from TMO or want to make a quick $100-$150 bucks off eBay before the major announcement a month from now.

Can get a discount on that new version especially if the rumors are true and there will be a subsidized $199 3G/wifi-less iPhone.

I think these 1G iPhone refurbs will drop to about $150 in 6-8 weeks.

As for warranty, is there any? I have heard that if the phone is not activated on AT&T, then Apple will not honor the warranty, even if the original firmware is restored and looks like it was not hacked. Is that true?

Thats what apple told me when i requestd them to reset my warranty. I have never activated mine with ATT.

It's simple to get warranty for your iphone. First thing you do restore the iphone via iTunes. 2nd get a pre-paid At&t sim card and plan... Thats pretty much it

I don't think they would be any 1gen iphone refurb will be on sale. i am thinking if i should jump in or should i not. cus i am not sure if the second gen would be worth it (for tmobile)

OK, so let me get this warranty thing straight, should I need warranty service.

So if the phone is somewhat usable (powers up and display works), then I should restore the phone using iTunes so that the phone looks like it never has been hacked. Then get a prepaid AT&T SIM and insert it.

If the phone us not usable (will not power up), then get a prepaid AT&T SIM and insert it.

Send in to Apple for repair.

To get a prepaid AT&T SIM, does a person just go online to AT&T or go to a big box retailer and pickup the cheapest GoPhone possible, activate it, make a call or two, and yank the SIM from the GoPhone?

I need some advice. My wife's plan is up with Verizon in September. I'm already up with Sprint, and just have $5 emergency plan in the meantime. Unless the new Iphone is just crap (unlikely), we will be with AT&T in October after her Verizon plan is up.

So do I just order two first gen phones now and wait to activate them, or do I wait for the new one. $250 is just plain CHEAP! Also, how do you order from AT&T online without activating one

You can't order two iphones. Only 1 iphone can be purchased for each household. No activaition, contract or credit check is done at the online at&t store.

Correct. During the last batch of refurbs, some folks went through the process to get their warranty extended properly. Upon faxing in their details to Apple, responses came back via email that they were ineligible for resetting the clock on their warranty - and therefore, had to live with whatever balance was left.

If you get an "iDay" phone (June 29) that was properly activated by its original owner, that may mean you will have a warranty measured in weeks.

But anything is possible.

what the helllllll, i just got an email saying they cannot process my order with the credit card. It says to call them back for further info. It doesnt state my order was canceled but i have till the 21st. Anyone else get that or is it just a problem i have?

I'm talking about on the AT&T site. Just like there is no info on AT&T website that it was coming, there won't be any info that it's gonna stop (most probably). But, as a correct source in predicting it will start May 14 in the email, obviously the email must be trusted when it also says it is ending on the 16th.

I have ordered a refurbed iPod Touch and a phone from another company. The phone was decent but still showed scratches. The iPod was pretty messed up on the back. However the screen was pristine. I think Apple cares the most about the screen and little about anything else.

last time when at&t had them they didnt erase some of the phones properly. some had contacts still in them and some came unlcoked already like mine. some people had scratches on theirs as well. it is not the same as the apple ones.

I've ordered a refurbished one from the web site before and it was in great condition. Just ordered another one a moment ago. I couldn't decide an 8G or 16G but I finally went with 8G (5, 6 movies is enough for me on a trip plus plenty of room left for songs, pics, applications, games. I store my movie collection in the hard drive, not the iphone because iphone is just used to watch them) 3G iphone will be out soon but I think AT&T will sell out these as fast as before.

This is how I did it...Go to cingular.com then shop for phones, enter zip then go down to pda smartphone, then scroll down to 8gb iphone refurbed and click learn more. Then after that to your right says buy it now.

Ordered at 8:30 AM PST today...Got the order confirmation for my 8GB at 8:32 AM PST today and got my shipping confirmation at 7:01 PM PST this evening. Says it has shipped with an estimated delivery date of 5/16...Looks like Friday is the day!!!

i dont know how you did it buddy, but when i bought one then 2 hours later my wife bough another one, her order was canceled due to same ship to address, so unless you used 2 diff, shipping addresses, i dont see how it might have happened....

Don't worry guys, as long as you got the confirmation of your order, you will get it. The last time I ordered, even though it said free priority 2 days shipping, I didn't get any shipping information a day later, I called and the guy said that I might have to wait 2 weeks or more because they needed to back order.
