So I have a Blackberry pearl 8100 by AT&T without the data plan, save the controversy for later, but I have a 1500 text plan. I know that many of their standard phones come with an AIM program that runs on sms text messages rather than data plans, so therefore my friends on their non pda/smartphones dont have to pay for data plans, only for texts, and can still IM. However, on my blackberry pearl refurbished there was no icon for AIM and all ive been able to find or read about are AIM programs that use data. Essentially I want to know of any programs that will allow me AIM access without the need to pay for a data plan, only the need for a texting plan. If you could please shed some light on this problem it would really help, I have not found any adequate threads regarding this topic. THANK YOU!

There are IM apps that use SMS to relay messages.

However you'd need a data plan to download them.

Can you please elaborate on this? What program uses SMS? What if I put the date plan on my T-Mobile BB for a day, downloaded the IM app that runs of texts, and then take off my data plan? I've had the data plan for a day before, and then I took it off via T-Mobile.com. Would that work? Wow, sorry if that made NO sense.

So why is it that all of the standard, non-pda/smartphones, come with the AIM program installed on their phone that only uses SMS? Also, is there no where online that I can download such a program? I'd assume there was an alternative because all of the less expensive phones come with it previously installed.

doesn't OZ come on the ATT phones like it does on tmobile?

yea normally it does, but that's on all the normal phones. I got the blackberry pearl which is a smartphone/pda so for some reason it didn't come preloaded. Therefore im trying to find out if anyone knows a way to get the program if it wasnt preloaded or a similar program.

Mobile IM is the only AIM messenger client I know of.
But just forward your IMs to your phone from AIM itself. I use over 20k a month on texts IDK how you can only live on 1500. My bill just reset yesterday and I have already used 2k...
