Just found this, could it be true?

Nomad,

Interesting that over 200 users have posted on the iSyn P800 petition on Apple.com and so far no 'official response from Apple.

If this 1.1 update supports P800, I'll be that much closer to having only one operating system at home (currently maintain both 10.2.6 and XP).

Michael,
just read this on the ThinkSecret site. Looks like they may be listening after all?

More iSync 1.1 details
By Nick dePlume, Publisher and Editor in Chief

May 13, 2003 - Earlier in the month, we reported on the forthcoming iSync 1.1 update, which is expected to be ready for release later in May. Since that time, we've received further confirmation and additional details.

Company documents say that iSync 1.1 will have support for more brands and models of wireless phones, confirming our earlier report that the update will feature expanded compatibility. While they do not go into further detail about the phones, we were initially told to expect support for more Motorola and Nokia phones, as well as the Sony Ericsson P800.

The intent of the new "Safari bookmark sync" feature has also become clearer: Sources say that the feature will enable syncing of Safari bookmarks between computers, via .Mac.

We've also learned that iSync 1.1 will include widened Palm device support. Sources confirmed that the update will support all Palm OS handhelds that are compatible with Palm Desktop 4.0 and HotSync 3.0 on OS X. The update will come with a new iSync 1.1 Palm Conduit, which, according to documentation, will boast performance and stability improvements over Version 1.0.

While it doesn't appear that iSync 1.1 will feature the over-the-air synching support we detailed in our first report, that functionality is being developed for a later release.

iSync 1.1, code-named Deckard, is due later in the month.

Michael I feel your pain I've had to resort to buying the virtual pc, running on the same mac os as you. So far ThinkSecret has been fairly reliable, hope they're right on this one. The virtual PC route, though effective, is extremely sllllooooowwwww!

How the hell will iSync 1.1 support the P800 if Address Book still doesn't even work properly?

To date, I've had no success in getting Address Book to send SMSs or dial over Bluetooth. The most I can get it to do is notify me of an incoming call, but even then I'm unable to answer or reject it.

Sorry to jump on the thread, but can I ask you what version of Virtual PC you are using? And are you emulating XP? If it works, I am tempted to try it on my 667 G4 TiBook. Although I'm sure it will be painfully slow, I still can't get full functionality going with my old PC at home with Win98. (won't sync)

I do hope that Apple supports the P800 soon. I liked how it worked with the t68 (when it worked, that is)

Thanks,
Ken

I don't know about Nomad598's setup, but I'm running VPC 6 with a clean install of XP Professional. All of the functions in PC Suite 1.4.2 appear to work perfectly when communicating with the P800 over USB.

Interesting to hear that you all are having same problems with Macintosh.

I am wondering how you use VPC and the P800. Do you sync with Outlook or another PIM on VPC/XP? If so, do you somehow then export/transfer that over to the Mac OS and Address Book or Entouratge?

FYI, I gave up on VPC 5 which was unbearably slow on my G4 667 AL12". I now have a Compaq XP laptop which I use in for my P800, iPaq GSM and GPS. I use Mac for everything else.

I don't do any synchronization in XP. All of my contact info is maintained in OS X.

There have been huge speed improvements in VPC6. I would suggest upgrading to that.

And by the way... there is no 667 AL12". I assume you meant a 667 TiBook, or an 867 AlBook.

thanks, stand corrected 867mhz Al12"

Frozenstar,
Granted VPC is a work around.
I'm using a Mac 1ghz DP but still find VPC 6 XP Pro to be substantially SLOWER than using native mac apps. Don't you?????

Without a doubt.

I'm not promoting the use of VPC6 as replacement to native P800/OS X integration... only as an alternative until Address Book and iSync work correctly.

Actually, I've found little need for using PC Suite on VPC6 to communicate with my P800. Bluetooth drag&drop in OS X works just fine for now.

FrozenStar,

Please clarify for me, with Drag and Drop do you loose any new contacts you have added to the P800? In other words, does the Drag and Drop overwrite the entire set of contacts on the P800.

I assume that this a one way only transfer Mac to P800 (ie no uplad from P800 to Mac?).

Thanks again,

Michael

It doesn't overwrite contacts. For initial population of the contact list in the P800, you can select all contacts in Address Book and send them as a single vCard to the P800. After that, it is best to simply update individual contacts by sending their specific vCards.

I've also had no problem in sending vCards from my P800 to my Mac. Once copied, simply drag them into Address Book.

FrozenStar,

Got it. Thanks. Will give it a shot.

Will take a bit of doing. I have PIM info on an Outlook XP -Synced to P800 and also Mac OSX Entourage and AddressBook.

Am trying to make sure I make the right choice before I go through all the work to clean up and sync 900+ contacts.

iSync 1.1 sounds like a big step in the right direction.

Thanks again,
Michael

I've used outlook too, the plus side is it truly syncs the contact, rather than having to keep track of the updates. I suppose one could create an "updated" folder both on the P800 and home computer to track any new or updated contacts, once they have been synced (exported them grouped as a single vCard), simply move them to their appropriate folders.
That should work for contacts, but the calendar remains a bit more of a challenge, this is where iSync 1.1 will come in handy. I hope!
