Tracking Data Usage on Windows Mobile 6.0

A colleague recently told me that phone carriers in Canada, Telus specifically, have no way of tracking whether you are using your Windows Mobile SmartPhone (in this case a Moto Q/Q9) for checking email or surfing the web. Is this true?

The implication is obvious. With Telus they offer $15 unlimited Email and Instant messaging, but that does not include surfing the web. To get total unlimited data, you have to purchase a $30 plan. But if they have no way of distinguishing web browsing from email downloading, you could effectively get the $15 plan and still be able to do it all.

Can anyone verify this and tell me a bit about how this works? ie: how is it impossible for them to know what you're using the device for when it comes to data?

Search the other threads, they know what phone you're using, and what data you're using.

Agreed, brookz is correct. As soon as you turn your phone on and it connects to the network, they know which phone/device it is. Whether they charge you differently for the data usage because you are not using a "carrier supported device" is another story though. Some have done this and got away with it and others have not.
