Is it possible to use an unlocked iPhone on AT&T without changing anything about your current plan? We have a family plan with unlimited text messages so I want to just keep that and not mess with a data plan, use free wifi.

Will that work?

I do believe that will work just fine but...I have read that some people were getting data charges.

just make sure you turn off data on your plan
call att and they can do it for you

I have a family plan/unlimited text with the old 5mb/mo. data on my Treo, which is all I need. I have a used locked iPhone coming. Can I slip my sim in and still have everything working as usual or what do I need to do? Unlock? Jailbreak? Thanks for any advice you can offer this iPhone newb.

You should only need to jailbreak and hactivate the phone, but a full unlock wouldn't hurt.
5MB will be used up easily on Safari if you don't pace yourself using it, so keep that in mind. Other than that, it should work fine if you jailbreak and/or unlock the phone.

i am using a iphone on my att plan without doing any change in the plans all your have to use it to activate the phone using ziphone and you are good to go

You can def use the iPhone without a data plan. My only suggestion would be when you jailbreak to install BossPrefs so you can disable the EDGE on it so you don't get charged since there's no other way to turn it off.

so, if i understand correctly, if i have an att plan, with the unlimited data plan and i jailbreak my phone, i will start getting charged for data use? isnt it possible to jailbreak my phone, while still using my current att plan?

One thing to consider, since you are using AT&T anyway, is the warranty. If you don't activate the phone via normal means, then you don't have a warranty. Although the draw back would be extending your contract out two years. So you need to weigh the pros and cons.

I took the route of going from T-Mobile prepaid to AT&T prepaid when I picket up one of those refurbed iPhones for two reasons. 1) to get Edge service (T-Mobile only has GPRS where I live) and 2) for a warranty.

However prepaid give me the option to leave whenever I want.
