Ugh. Is it really worth it?

Currently, I'm running a BJ II on ATT, and I've been following the iPhone news like crazy as of late.

Just two or three days ago, 3G was revealed in my area, and that excited me to no end, haha.

I've been playing with the iPhone every time I've stepped foot into an ATT store since it's release, but I never got hooked on it. Now that there's speculation of a 3G version at 16GB, I'm more and more enthused about it. I have a 16GB iPod Touch, and I absolutely love the thing to death.

Now with 3G and all the features of the touch, plus a phone - I'm stoked.
Do you guys think it's worth it for me to upgrade to a 3G iPhone and leave my BJII behind?

Had a BJII and had my iPhone for about 6 months. Hands down best phone I've ever owned. With that being said, BJII is a really nice phone too. Depends on what you want out of your phone.

I'm an extremely avid texter. I mean, I average somewhere around at least 9,000 a month, if not more.

However, the creaking of wearing buttons gets on my nerves. I've had my BJII for 2 months, and I'm ready to throw it out of a window, seeing as nearly all of my buttons creak so badly.

Previously, I had the Voyager over on Verizon, but I got rid of that and switched to ATT due to financial reasons. I'm finding that 3G speeds are INCREDIBLE and nearly twice as good as anything I've ever experienced with Verizon.

Is the iPhone's keyboard really insane to get used to? I don't want to buy a phone, and not like the way it texts. That's really the number one feature that I look for in phones - as sad as that is.

As far as other features go, I mean - I've witnessed the browsing features with my iTouch in Safari, and they're second to none. Hands down, the best mobile browser I've ever experienced. The e-mail on the iTouch is gorgeous, too and works with GMail (my primary e-mail account) just fine.

Has anyone tried tethering with the iPhone? I'm taking classes online, so internet connection is going to be a must for me in places that have no Wi-FI, and stuff.

Depending on price, I may also be extremely interested in picking up an iPhone if they do indeed decide to incorporate Mobile TV, but I won't get too far ahead of myself.

And then there's the Vu from LG. Ahh! So many options.

Texting takes a little while to get used to, but once you do, there should be no problems. I tried using T9 on my SE the other day, got really frustrated with having to use the keys, and not having a full keyboard. I forgot what keys feel like on a phone, don't really miss them after using the iPhone.

300 SMS messages per day?!? WOW!

I have to admit the iPhone is the best phone I've had yet also, and I've had 20 or 30 high-end phones in the past 5 or so years.

Aside from it's lack of 3G, lack of OTA sync'ing (which should be remedied in June with FW 2.0), and a couple of other minor details, it's my perfect phone: easy to navigate, good voice quality, nice screen (and touch-based at that!), thin and lightweight, etc.

I used to be an avid Windows Mobile user - I thought there was none greater, until I used an iPhone. Now I think Windows Mobile is a good phone OS, but it is light years behind the iPhone in terms of user interface and grace (of all things). Windows Mobile, now, to me, seems like too little too late. It has 3G and DUN, oh and a Remote Desktop client (which only really comes in handy in a serious pinch)... That's about all it has over the iPhone, generally speaking.

I'm actually trying to purchase my third iPhone now. I just want a 4GB model for light weekend use to replace my big, bulky AT&T Tilt when I'm not working. I don't use it for music/movies very often - I just use it as a phone.

Just my $0.02.

About your tethering question.

The RDP was one thing that I really like about my WM phones and one that I was concerned about when I make the jump to the 3G iPhone, but I found this: http://cre.ations.net/creation/webv...-on-your-iphone which might help out with RDP. Since I have no iPhone I can't try it but if you're missing RDP it would be worth a look.

If you have fabled 3G service as good as you say in your area, dump the BJ II and get the 3G iPhone. If you like the iPod touch as much as you say you do, you will love the new iPhone. It should serve you better and it would be worth it if the service is there. Apart from 3G connectivity, we'll see what else it will bring. GPS perhaps, but the way you talk, you should get it.

Texting takes time to get used to. It will make you hate the phone hate first if you bought it mainly to be a texting phone!

However, like you, i send tons of texts. After getting used to this virtual keypad, I am actually alot faster on this iPhone than any other qwerty phone I have ever owned. It corrects alot of simple mistakes for you, so that helps a ton! It takes time to get used to it, however, once you do, you will love it. Its so nice texting and not hearing that dang ticking sound from the keys!

I loved the iPhone when it came out, then got bored with it, sold it, and missed it after about a month. Bought another and unlocked, jailbroke, etc... and I absolutely love it now! When 3G comes out, this phone will be insane. Also, if the firmware 2.0 updates it where you can send and receive MMS, this will be mind blowing for me! I will be a happy camper!

I too had a blackjack 2, but trust me... you will be 100000% satisfied with the keypad and the overall purcahse of an iphone!

Wow. Thanks a lot for all the responses, guys.

I wasn't too sure about it, but now I may have been convinced to go 3G iPhone.

When the iPhone first came out, I was reading about how texting on the phone seemed nearly impossible, and then I stopped really caring. At first, I never really wanted one, but as they started to improve on things, I started to gain interest.

If texting gets as easy as people say it is, and there is definitely a 3G release along with the implementation of MMS, and other good stuff like that, there's nothing that can really stop me at that point. I just don't want my iTouch to go useless .

Maybe I'll hand it down to my brother. My iTouch is my main source of music in my car, haha. I'd obviously get the 16GB 3G iPhone.

eh just hold off. Are you browsing on your phone right now? I mean if I'm on the go i'll just check my email, txts, and mobile sites....

cand do for now.

OP I've owned the Tmobile Dash, an unlocked BJ2, Treo 650, the Wing, Blackberry Curve and BB 8700g to name a few QWERTY phones and I still love the iPhone keypad the best. I text ALOT quicker on the iPhone than any of those others. I text around 3000 texts a month and don't have any complaints. Plus with the full webbrowser I find myself not turning on my laptop as much unless I absolutily have to. I even pay my bills from my iPhone....
