ok, so im new to this whole phone hacking thing but after much searching i think i have figured out how to put free games onto your LG VX8550. that is the phone i am using and i am using Bitpim. this is what i did:

I downloaded a game ( Tetris ) off of telus which cost 7bucks and noticed it created a new folder in BitPim under the BREW>ams. Just a new number for the next application. i seen a .jar file in there and thought, "what the hey, i'll give it a try". i downloaded a few free .jar's and .jad's games and threw them in the the new file for tetris which the file name in bitpim was BREW>ams>16.jar. i didnt touch anything in the folder labled 16, i just added a zelda game i downloaded zelda.jar and zelda.jad dragged it into this folder. and without even reseting my phone, i went to the game and apps folder, and all i seen was Tetris in there. normally when i clicked on Tetris it would ask me to run it, but this time, when i clicked on Tetris it opened with 2 more subicons: Tetris and Zelda! i clicked on each one and both of them loaded and played PERFECTLY! so thats it. its easy!

you dont even have to do something that cost money either. i downloaded a GPS app which is free and not 7$, maybe .50cents for the download fee. and then that created a folder 17 under BREW>ams. i just threw some .jars and .jads in there, and then when i click on the GPS app i downloaded, it opens with as folder with sub apps and games in there that also work! couldnt believe how easy that was. pure dumb luck if you ask me. i dont know if it makes a difference that im with Telus though.

just thought i'd share this great discovery and im going to have fun with free games on my Chocolate Spin! cheers!

So this is just for the LG 8550 (rather than the one with VX, which is just for Verizon Wireless). It's possible it will work with the VX version, but likely that it might not due to the firmware that's on it (which is different than the Telus one).

So I tried your trick here and didn't work for me. I also have the 8550 with Telus and also downloaded Tetris. It created folder 16 brew/ams. I added a zelda.jar file in that folder but when I go into my phone to games then select Tetris, the game loads up and not Zelda. No second option like you posted. Care to elaborate a little more? Thanks

ya it doesnt seem to work if you just add the file zelda.jar. you need to add both that and zelda.jad.
it doesnt seem to work for some java games. you have to have both .jar and .jad of the same name. and unfortunately a lot of the free java games have a very small resolution so its kinda irratating to play some. i dont know if anybody knows any good free java game sites that have a resolution to fit this phone?

oh also, make sure that you know which folder is actually the tetris folder. i downloaded a program to play java games on my pc and then exported each .jar from the numbered folders in Bitpim and discovered that those are the other apps like the media player and such. so it might not work if you put it in the wrong folder.

so to sum up, make sure you're adding both the .jar and .jad of the same name to the folder and that you're putting them into the right folder.

I did this a few months ago with my 8550 chocolate spin but putting the jar and jad files in the tetris directory didn't work. I setup a website and got people to chip in and I would order all the games. Once I installed the games on my phone I would copy the brew folders with 15/16/17/ ect and also you need to back up the db folder to reference the games. As long as one person orders the games and we;re all cloning from that one person then I think this is the best and cheapest way to have all the good quality games.

You have to be very careful with messing with the ContentInfo and ExecutionInfo files. This phone does not forgive you for messing with those files.

If it doesn't like the change to those files the phone will not boot and there is no hard reset. I just had to spend 50 bucks total to get my phone reflashed with the software.

The OP's trick works perfectly as long as the jar file runs on the phone. I just ran 4 free games on my LG 8550 using the OP's method. I've collected a large quantity of generic J2ME free games from GetJar.com and so far all that I've tried work without issue on this phone.

I tried it again and it did work. I noticed that I have to have java games that have both the jar and jad file. It will not work with just the jar games. I opened some of the jad files that I do have with wordpad and there's really not much there. I wonder if I can take some of the jar only games and create a jad file so that my phone references them. I'll keep everyone posted here. I will check out getjar.com and see what I can find there. Are there any worthwhile games or apps there? Also, I noticed just now that there is no selection for the telus 8550 chocolate spin. Do you know what the closest match would be for this phone on that site?

I just go for J2ME platform -> Compatible which shows all generic J2ME apps and games.

This will not work on the LG VX8550 because Verizon does not use java, they use Get it now BREW games.

Yup, this seems to be for the Telus version: http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...544&postcount=2.

This is not Verizon. This is for Telus in Canada. The LG VX8550 chocolate spin uses java games.

Part of the point actually is that the VX is only used in VZW's LG model names, for Telus, for example, the model would just be LG 8550 (rather than the VZW one which is LG VX8550).

Atually the Telus version has VX8550 this time.

Not as the model but under FCC ID. Model LG 8550 FCC ID BEJVX8550.

So some users can easy confuse that the reference to VX also applies to telus.

The 8500 on telus also had FCC ID of BEJVX8500 and also was confused by some users.

Mine says VX8550 right on the box and it's the only LG chocolate spin that I know of in Canada. Has anyone tried JAVA games on the brew version in the USA? My telus phone has a directory called "brew" I'm wondering what exactly in the filesystem makes it different.

It's not the file system as much as the firmware that differentiates the two.

Verizon doesn't have a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) in their phones. It's not that the phone isn't capable, it's that the software isn't there to crunch java.

They use a different language for their games and apps called BREW.

Telus just puts their java into the brew folder being they take the Verizon phones and nerf them for Canada.
