Whats involved in changing phones?

My son dropped his phone and broke it. I found a cheap one on Craigslist.
How do I go about replacing the broken one with the "new" one? Presumably there is a charge for it?

Assuming the new phone is a valid VZW one that can be activated, you can either do it online by logging into your account, going to your phone section, and following the activate phone link, or you can do it by calling VZW or stopping by a VZW store (they typically charge for something like that, although they shouldn't if you actually tried to do it online and it didn't work for you for some reason, as that does happen sometimes).
