Unlocked Touch Dual at Best Buy for $549

Phone Scoop just broke the news that the unlocked Touch Dual will be available at Best Buy starting this weekend for $549. I'm assuming that it's GSM and will have the 850MHz band. If so, this is certainly good news and might mean that the unlocked 850MHz Diamond may reach our shores later this year at a reasonable price.

Supposed to be at bb mobile, which I've heard is a walk in, walk out with it in hand kind of place. The rest of us with no bb mobile nearby will have to do mail order.

I have some more information (I guess I have to read HTC press releases more carefully):

Debuting in the United States, the HTC Touch Dual Incorporates an Intuitive Touch Screen, Slide-Out Keypad and Windows Mobile 6.1 Software

So it looks like this Dual will be quad-band with WM 6.1, available at both Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile in store and mail order. What's exciting to me is that HTC will start selling unlocked GSM devices direct in the U.S. Initially I thought the North American Version of the Diamond would only be available from the carriers. It looks like HTC plans to go direct, which is good news.

The press release list the 20 key spec.. But why BB show the 16 key version?

Just picked one up. Can confirm it's the "suretype" keypad.

Hi: Did you get yours from BB mobile? Also, suretype means 20 keys, right?

would appreciate it you can tell the forum if the Dual has built in GPS. thanks.

20 key. Bought at a loca Best Buy. Not sure on GPS but I did see "External GPS" listed somewhere and the Euro model doesn't have it so my guess is no internal GPS.

which store in houston itjitsu?

Posted by: iJITSU

Humble. They had two in stock. I originally called The Woodlands. They didn't have any in stock, did a search, and said that Humble was the only store in the district with them in stock. Houston is probably made up of at least two districts so if Humble is out, maybe a West or South Houston would have it.

Why would someone want this device over the AT&T Tilt? The full keyboard seems like a huge loss.

Surely I am missing something?

what else can you confirm about the phone? is it 3g? i know on the bestbuy website it says it operates on the 850/900/1800/1900MHz networks and has Quad-band GSM/Dual-band UMTS. But on the HTC website it says it has Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) and HSDPA (850/1900Mhz) connectivity. Correct my skewed thoughts if i'm wrong, but 850/1900 mhz are the bands that at&t runs it's 3g off of right? Oh and how is the touch interface and such?

Yeah, the Touch Dual is thicker than the Touch and heavier too.

I have the tytn2 and had the euro dual and the big advantage for the dual over the tytn is size and weight. If your used to having full qwerty then it's probably not for you, but I do most of my emailing from my laptop later in the evening. During the day a short reply from the slide out kb of the dual is fine and I love the light weight. It's strickly a preference thing, but coming from both I'd prefer the dual. Only thing is no gps or wifi. Tytn/tilt has both. The slider is fabulous also. Love it!

Got it. Still seems that the Touch lacks where the TILT has it all.

Yeah, thats for sure. I love my kaiser but the weight issue is getting to me. It feels nice and solid in hand tho. I've become a shirt pocket carrier and with the tytn I get that lopsided man boob look. The dual is light as a feather in comparrison. The diamond would be nice and light but to sacrifice battery capacity for lighter weight. Just gotta find a happy medium.

It is quad band gsm and 850/1900 band UMTS/HSDPA.
The touch interface is nice, but doesn't go very "deep." An interesting UI overlay.

I am thinking we should know shortly if the diamond interface can be installed on the touch dual. If so, Im in.

Yup I agree. Check out the review of the Nokia E71 over on BGR. Thats a hot device. Might be tempted to return my Touch Dual if that comes out within the 3o days I have to return it!

Ok, let me ask you this....

Will the new Sony Xperia made by HTC have an "improved" size and weight?

The Sony seems to have all the same features as the TILT and also everything that the Touch lacks too.

Thanks

Well if you mean all that and a smaller size it sure looks like it. But Ive never seen one in person. It does look hot though!

I believe most of the European versions of the Tilt was first launched in August of 2007, the Touch Dual was fisrt available in Europe about 6 months ago. It is quiet impressive to see the Experia will have all the features in a compact size and that HTC have made all that progress ina year's time.

If HTC need to do one thing, thats to come out with some thinner devices. Even the Touch Dual could shed a little bit. Id love to see a device like the iPhone but with a slide out QWERTY.

Ok, so I connected the bluetooth to my car flawlessly this morning and left the blutooth on all day. So far I havent seen any battery degradation between having it on all day and not having it on all day. Also, I have to say the voice quality of this phone is exceptional. Its so crisp and clear people(who I talk to occasionally) have actually asked me if I got a new phone. Didnt realize my Curve sounded that bad.

The other thing I thought I would have a hard time with was transitioning from the full qwerty on the BB to the 20 key qwerty on this device. Well, after a couple days of using it, I find myself not even sliding it open anymore. I use the keypad on the screen without any issues. I even think that I type faster now with the predictive text and the fact that it can guess what Im about to type.

Really never thought Id like a windows device. Only gripe I could come up with at the moment though is why theres even touch-flo on the device. Since I can do everything I need right from the home screen, whats the point of going to that other interface?
