I tried ATT Telenav and absolutely hated it..

What would be the best software out there to put on the mobile phone.. that can give traffic information and voice directions.. I like the windows live search .. good software.. for free.. any other ones that might give turn by turn directions by voice..? traffic information ...

Try MapQuest mobile, they have a trial and you'll find it has the best gas prices and traffic(INRIX) out there!

If you need the map data on the phone along with a lot of other stuff there are several to chose from. I recommend the free trial for MQM first.

ATtempted the first try at mapquest /// Not bad.. better than telenav... couldnt get the voice to work at first or lock in on satellites however have trouble hearing sometimes the instructions.. ANy use of other navigation software ..

would tom tom or garmin work better since the maps are not online and when you are in a no service area the maps can still load on the phone?

Yes, tom tom or garmin, and CoPilot all have what you're looking for, but they range in price(~$100.00) for the app and they charge for traffic by the month. CoPilot will give you a free 30 day return, traffic in the US is from a Yahoo feed so it's free(but not as good as any that use INRIX). So TOMTOM and Garmin would be the alternatives. I would like to see a side by side there because I haven't used Garmin and their site is vague!

Btw, on a Wm phone MQM is a no-brainer, it just works. What phone did you use it on?

I decided to hang on to the motorola Q... What about like Inavigate or some of the other ones that I see out there.. The test to see if the mobile software is that on some gps the cherokee casino is on the wrong side of the street.. I will have to check with map quest to see if it is on the correct side of the street.. and it does not even have the Cherokee Casino resort in here.. Any way to put POIS in or no? in Mapquest.. How bout any of the others... I heard Tom tom was decent.. I have a regular tom tom gps and sometimes it gives you some weird routing but I dont know about the newer mobile versions..

So I take it that Tom tom and garmin use INrix like mapquest mobile navigator..

I think you'll find placement of POI's aren't a good indicator of how well a GPS application works, because they are notoriously off. It's difficult to geolocate a store that isn't on a road like normal addressee are.

And most applications that can import custom POI sets can import most of the POI lists. Each manufacturer has their own extension(including Google) so you can either just rename them(the.xxx part) or use a converter. If this is important to you Google is your friend.

It's $80.00 bucks at Amazon.

The amazon one is most probably a refurbished one, or a chinese one.

I called Garmin today and they told me some interesting things.

1. XT won't work with any phone that isn't GPS enabled(although I think there might be a workaround), they have other applications that are sold with a puck.

2. Check with any retailer for the maps, 2009 are out at Garmin. He implied that there are some XT cards with the old maps and if you get one of those you would have to pay to update if you want the latest maps.

3. If you get this application you can download the newest UI, engine, and OS. The new one is:
Quote:
Mobile software version 4.20.50w

4. And now the experience is similar to their GPS PNDs like the 760!

5. The best part is when using XT the services like traffic, gas, and hotel.com are free if you have data on the phone!

6. If you buy through Garmin there is a 30 day return policy, unlike some other e-talors.

7. You can use POIedit to make your own POI's and POI sets!!!

All I know is as soon as Sprint publishes the new ROM for my Touch I will order it.

appears that garmin xt seems the best out of all the ones out there.. providing you get the 2009 maps.. and being able to correct pois...

POIs seem to be a selling point to you, and being critical you may be disappointed. I can(and do) run Tomtom, Navman, Navagon, MapQuest mobile etc. at the same time and can tell you the POIs of all of them are not accurate or even predictable. GPS PND manufacturers use them as a feature, but don't geolocate them accurately. You can create new ones, but moving the ones that are there aren't possible.

With an appropriate poi editor you can roll your own, but it would be a pita!

Just take advantage of Garmins 30 day policy and find out for yourself.

are there any poi editors that would work ..and can add businesses that have been open for two years or longer... does tom tom mobile let you edit poi positions... ?
