Nokia 3650 "better" than P800 !!!

OK, well, as I am sure most of you who read this forum know, there is certainly no one more enthusiastic, or happy with their P800 than me. But, I have been in Europe a great deal this past month, and I now understand why Nokia will thrive, and the jury is still out on SE.

When I was younger, I would have these musical discussions, like, who is, say the best drummer in rock music? Well, my pseudo intellectual friends and I came to the conclusion, that, taste, and talent, is something that is perceived, and dictated by the masses -- otherwise, who is to say what is best, except for concrete facts of judgement by people ... well, that being the case, Ringo Starr (during Beatles era), and Phil Collins are the best drummers ever, because they have attained the most success via sales, and concert goers. Sure there are others that will argue a different point. But, who is right -- the cult follower, or the one with the most fans???

Well, I have to say, this is the case with the Nokia 3650. Just today, I was reading in 2 newspapers here in Europe, one being the Wall St Journal Europe edition, about the explosion of the new "smartphones" --- current sale sfigures, projected ones -- well, they sure did praise the growth, and increased use of smartphones, both now, and the few years projected -- and they talked all about THE Smartphones -- the Orange SPV, and the wonderkind of technology, Nokia 3650 -- boy, did they go on on how many things the 3650 can do. What a great innovation. The pictures, the video, the "Smarts" of the address book. Boy, this Nokia 3650 is the living end. It told how this one housewife uses it, and how it is so affordable, at about €250-€300. And how this woman will use cellphones more, because of the easier access to a fully synced address book. Oh, and how the 3650 will be taking the US by storm through AT&T and T-Mobile. It is so great ..... and these were SUPPOSED to be, unbiased, professional, business newspapers -- but, notice how they FORGOT to mention one, insignificant unit ?????? That´s right, kiddos, that overly complicated unit by the drowning Sony Ericsson company, the P800 ...

I see what is happening ... the Nokia 3650 is perfectly positioned ... it is not too expensive, and it is features per € (or $) much richer than the P800, at 1/2 the price.

It seems, that, from the Euro standpoint, thje 3650 IS the turning point of convergence of PDA and cellphone.

SE, you missed the boat on that marketing call. You need a unit that will fit snugly between the T610, and P800 -- otherwise, who makes the "best" phones ?? --- the one that sells 2 million, or the one that sells 15 million ?????

Auf weiderzein ....

Ringo Starr may have the most sales but John Bonham is the best.

I don't know?????????????Ringo Star?????Phil Collins????

I'm think'n Shelia E!!!!

She bangs the Drum!!! Oh Yeah Baby!!

Oh, by the way....just as Chet Atkins was to the guitar (the best but a commercial nobody) Buddy Rich was to the drum... I remember seeing him on a Ed Sullivan show when I was a little kid and it was amazing what he could do on the drums!!!

This is really sad. While my P800 was off to SE for a firmware upgrade, I was "forced" to use my free 3650 that I get to use from work. I'd forgotten how much I hate Nokias. I didn't realize how useful a touch screen really is. Now I understand how god awful the round keypad really is. But I can see how the 3650 sales will forever blow the P800 out of the water. The low price is just too hard to ignore. Nokia knows what they are doing, I'm not sure if SE does. Working at a T-Mobile store you would no hear the amount of Ericsson bashing I hear. Not just from the public, but from almost all the other people I work with in my market. SE had better be quick about getting the T610 into the hands of the carriers, or they will continue the downward slump. If more people knew about products like the P800, I think they would really have a shot. Just last week I show mine to a guy who was at the kiosk. He had sprint and was thinking about getting some Kyocera PDA thingy they have. He had me activate a new T-Mobile line on the spot, even before he had the P800. A few days later he comes in with a brand new P800 and is in love with it. In fact he had me activate another SIM because he bought TWO of them. This is from a guy who up until that point, didn't even know the P800 existed.

Anyway, I'm sooo glad to be done with the 3650. Thank god SE's turn around time for upgrades is 1 week....

They may have a problem with their PR, but not with the unit itself.

The P800 is not positioned for the same people as the 3650. I can't even understand why they call the 3650 a "smart phone".

BTW, the 610 is positioned for the same market. As I understand it, they are starting to sell it now.

Mostly games, some contact management and some other crap. No touch screen and none of the really important open features that the P800 offers.

Regarding price, you get what you pay for...

Hey guys,

I hope I don’t rock the boat too much here but I think you guys have missed the point in jeffharris’ article. Like most of you guys, I do believe that the P800 is by far the best phone that us commoners can buy at this time but regardless of how good something is, if it is not properly priced it will generally be consider a bad buy. Price is usually one of the biggest factors in overall ratings and in this case, boosting the 36xx’s and plummeting the P800’s. I am assuming that, like myself, all of you have recognized and know how to squeeze out all the features of this phone (or if nothing else, recognized its’ inherent bragging rights). This means that we have all, in some way, justified the cost of this phone for our self (I paid over $1,200 cnd for my P800 two months ago. FIDO will be coming out with it around May 22 and the estimated price will be $1,000 cnd).

As much as I would disagree with jeffharris’s article, I have to remember that this article is rated by and aimed at people who are not in the inner sanctum of understanding for this phone - like us, for example. I do agree with the article in that the P800 is very over priced. At first glanced, the price seems to be justifiable but after considering that the P800 does not really boast any new technology but rather it only converge (and in some cases only to some degree) currently tried and readily “off the shelf” technologies, I did reconsider my decision.

If any of you guys want a good laugh one day, go over to the Panasonic DG88 forum. According to them that is THE phone of all phones. I know this because when I voice out the slightest complaints about my GD88 I get bashed around the world several times. I’ve also mention about the P800 and most of them thinks that the P800 is not even a match to their Gx8x. and that I was stupid to have spent the money for it. (Thus reflecting the judgment of article.)

Did you know that Batamax was by far a better video tape format than VHS but Sony held on to it so they may continue to over price the technology? Look what happened to it now. Can anyone of you tell me that you have bought a new Batamax machine in last 7 years? Further, what type of VCRs do Sony currently make and sell to the public? Bata or VHS?

My point is, it’s the majority of public acceptance that makes or breaks a product/technology not how much better it is or what it can do that others can’t.

Regards,
AfF.

Well,
I was trying to buy a P800 in germany without contract.I failed because the unit is available only with subscription at D2 or O2 for 599 euros. So, imagine what the price would be without contract.
P800 is so great, but also so expansive.Nokia is doing cheap phones, not so great, but affordable.
What can I say.I am sorry for SE for such a bad marketing.

sometimes, the operators jack up the price for non-contract as they want their subscriber to have the 'exclusivity'
oh well, unless you pay that price, you won't have the exclusivity @ all.
just a thought.

Well, I agree with the comment you get what you pay for. The P800 is by far a much more powerful tool than the Nokia. Nokia, however, is the King of marketing and that was one of the reasons behind the merger of Sony/Ericsson was to exploit Sony's marketing skills. The fact tha I have only seen one magazine add for the P800 while the Nokia Sugar Bowl in New Orleans back in January had the 3650 all over the screen just says that Nokia is a better marketer of it's products. As an investor I wish Ericsson would have cut the handset business out all together and focused on it's carrier technology which it is far superior to any other company. As a fan of the handset technology though, I would hate to see it go......but given time and the new low end handsets and medium range T610, (yes I know it's expensive now but when a carrier picks it up it will probably be less than $200 with new service) Sony/Ericsson's fortunes will improve. Nokia has had the market share for some time now and you don't take it back with one phone......The P800 is to Sony/Ericsson as the Corvette is to GM.........an image maker and a testament to the the company's ability to make a high performance product,,,but it's not the sales leader or a money making product.

bengalboy...i don't think it could have been said better. Plus let's not forget the P800 is priced higher than the 3650 for having more "expensive" features. Not dissing the 3650, great phone and all, I just feel funny about directly comparing the two. I feel they are marketed at different people as well.

I plan on getting picking up a P800 but what makes it so much better than the 3650 besides touchscreen and more advanced pda features? what can the P800 do that the 3650 cannot?

The best way to find out is to download the manuals for both phones (download the whitepaper for the P800 as well) and go through them to make a feature per feature comparison for your self. After you are familiar with both phones go and play with them for a while. I trust that you will see a day and night difference between them, I did!
