so this phone the GSM portion is only the 800/1900 bands right?

The GSM bands that the Telus Blackberry 8830 World Edition has are not able to be used in north america.

In North America we use 850 and 1900
As the BB 8830 only has the Ability to pick up the 800 and the 1800 mhz bands you will not be able to use any north American GSM providers sim with this phone.

No. GSM at 900MHz and 1.8GHz on the 8830.
