GSM+iDEN Blackberry

A guy I know told me he has a Blackberry that works with GSM carriers as well as iDEN carriers. I've tried some searching both here on the forums as well as on google and just generally asking around and nobody seems to know anything about this. Does anyone here have any insights as to whether this is true, or is he just pulling my leg?

You have to buy a Blackberry for an iDEN carrier, iDEN Blackberry's will only work with an iDEN carrier.. If you buy an unlocked GSM carrier it will work on any GSM carrier, but not iDEN.

That's what I thought, but I'm pretty new to Blackberrys so I wanted to make sure.

What is the model and branding on the device?

He didn't show it to me, but he wasn't super smart on this kind of stuff, he said he thought it was a Blackberry RIM...

After that I just kind of left the conversation.

I am guessing since his iDen BB has a sim card in it, he thinks it does both technologies.

He claimed to get service with both of them, I figured it was just the "lol i can put sim in both" thing at first too.

You can always check out all currently available models at Blackberry.com. I sure don't see any iDen/GSM models and surely there would be a lot more hype if one had recently been released or was going to be released.

Personally, I'd stay away from it. RIM makes the Blackberry so saying it is a "Blackberry RIM" means nothing.
