If yes, can you comment on it?

I have both running on my Saga. To get the router working you need to find an ICS cab install (Internet Connection Sharing). You can find these on the XDA developers website that others reference.

The sling player works fine. No issues that I have encountered.

I have WMWifiRouter running as well (with ICS) and it works well, have used it for my iPod Touch and laptop with no problems. Driven 200 miles on an interstate with it running the whole way no issues.

this is without paying a "tethering fee" right? The other device just sees it as an available Wi-fi connection?

Posted by: jasoraso

I had the same complaint with the screen. I drive a convertible, and although my top is up now, I knew that the in spring, the screen would be close to unusable for me. I think the effort to have the screen not be recessed created an unintended effect of having a reflective glare from the touchscreen overlay.

I returned my Saga and am now using a TouchPro - I Love the VGA screen. wish I had more external buttons, but I'm getting used to it ...

These guys seem to have a good selection of Samsung Saga (SCH-i770) Accessories

I'm still holding out on a case, to see if www.vajacases.com custom designs one for the Samsung Saga.

Does anyone have any idea how to use the Pocket Outlook program to connect to an Outlook Web Access server? I really need to be able to get my work email, but my company is very protective about those kinds of things.

I was able to use ChatterMail to do this back when I had my Treo, I have to believe that it's possible in WinMo. I have tried setting it up in ActiveSync (using Add Server Source) and each time it doesn't work. Am I doing something wrong?

Is there any way I can get my Outlook mail into Pocket Outlook (or some other program) without involving IT?

Posted by: stormin

Some companies restrict access unless the device has been registered to work with your exchange server. That being said, when I set mine up, I put in the webmail address for pocket outlook to find the right server (webmail.company.com) found it no problems and set itself up and started syncing.

For those who received the Saga. Can I please get a screenshot of your Network Adapter panel?

I am trying to get Internet Connection Sharing working on the Omnia and wanted to see if Saga uses the same adapter.

Posted by: amujee

The first adapter listed on the SAGA is:

SAMSUNG 2700S WiFi Adapter

The rest is the same as your screenshot.

Are there any hard cases (like the one Verizon sells) that work with the extended battery?

Posted by: TimeBandits

I have wished for this type of form factor from Verizon for a long time now and I can truely say that I am very happy with this phone! Finally Verizon has given us a Blackjack option and it is great!!!
The more I explore the many features and the more I try to find fault with it - the more I realize this is just one great working Pocket PC Phone - with all the bells and whistles you could want. Sometimes simpler is better and this phone walks that fine line perfectly.
Good job Verizon - thank you Samsung (and no I am not a paid advertiser - I sell insurance and get a kick out of user friendly tech!)

Posted by: soundtrack

just got it in the mail but i cant hook it up until the 15th(thats when my plan starts)

but so far

pros

the qpad, and optical mouse are really nice to navigate ,touch screen is nice easy scrolling, very touch responsive, wmo 6.1 it takes a while to get use to too but its pretty up front, camera is decent not as bad as you would think for a pda.keys are much better then the black jack and my old centro, light weight and fits in the pocket even though its pretty long 4.88".

the cons- THE fu*kING BATTERY LIFE ON THIS THING KEEP IN MIND I HAVENT EVEN ACTIVATED IT YET OR BEEN ONLINE and the battery last fu*king 3-4 hours and verizon lie's lie's and lie's

it says

# Standard Battery – 1300 mAh
# Usage: Up to 300 minutes OR
# Standby: Up to 325 hours

but dont be fooled this battery is the worst i have ever had in my life and verizon lies,i was on 47% battery then i took a 45 second video and 3 picture it went down to 33% in about 5 minutes.

well i have 30 days to return it and i activate it on the 15th so ill give it 3 days to test with web/email/etc but for now i dono this would be a great phone but the battery ruins it and its 50$ for a expansion battery at 1800mah which is gonna give me what a extra 2 hours of life?

Posted by: wilspringer

I love this phone also and what is up with the battery? I think they are putting generic batteries in these phones. Verizon sent me a new battery $39.00 and said they will credit me for that when I return the old one. I just finished charging at recommended 4 hours and it went down to 50% in less than two hours. 30 minutes pone use and 15 minutes internet use. I do not believe this! Anyone else having battery problems?

Posted by: soundtrack

yup read my post above yours

this has to be a joke i never had a phone that worked for 3 hours and 1 1/2 hours of use time ,verizon is a joke right now ,my razr lasted 4 days my saga barley last 4 hours

probably getting a
BlackBerry® Curve 8330 for now this phone would of been great with better battery life

Wait until you activate the phone to jump to conclusions on the battery. My theory is that if the phone has not been activated it may be confused as to which network it is supposed to be accessing and may be searching for a network that doesn't "exist" according to the phone in it's unprogrammed state.

I had the Saga for a couple weeks and my battery life was no where near the horrible experience you have had thus far. I could get it to last all day as long as I wasn't texting continuously in the dead zone known as my desk at work.

I guess you're new to the world of PDA phones.

Posted by: Travelr

I've handled this phone (one of the tech guys at my firm had an evaluation unit) and I was very impressed. I have an xv6900 and it's fine except for the battery life and not being a world phone. So my main concern is the reported short battery life. Has anyone had experience with the extended battery (after it's been cycled a few times?).

im not gonna lie i am new to pda's is this typical?

any way im considering just getting this second hand black berry 8330 for now until they come with something similar to the saga but better battery life

PDA phones are typically beaten like a government mule, and a lot of them are made to BE workhorses, but as a result, you do not get the battery life your used to from a 'pure' cell phone.

That being said, 3-4 hours is a bit much for 50% of a battery. I would check the settings and make sure the auto beaming, BT (if your not using it), and any other 'optional' (Wi-Fi) setting like those is off. A lot of devices drain fast because a setting like that is on without a need or knowledge of the user.

I would also make sure it is shutting down as it should (timing-out and sleeping). Sometimes if a device isn't set right it stays on ALL the time.

There are other backlight, timing, data.... settings that can be tweaked for battery life as well!! I would go through your settings and look into those points, plug in for an over-night charge, and see how it goes from there.

1st couple days I was kiling it within an hour, before ahving to plug it into the lighter socket. I'm a general manager for a courier service, so I'm on the road all day long. After working with all the settings, I'm getting a whole days use out of the phone without having to use the lighter socket, I found using Wi-Fi was my biggest killer. I also set the phone to only turn on and off with the top power button, not turn on with the push of any button, I stil get all my reminders and phone calls. If you do what the above poster says, you should be able to get a ful days use out f the phone, but I still always carry a car charger, wall charger, and usb charger with me at all times, always be preparred!

I thinks its important for anyone interested in getting this phone or any other PDA that battery life is always a hot issue. The Saga is by far one of the best PDAs available from Verizon. I have had my unit for about a month now, here is my two cents...

The Saga is loaded with power-hungry features. It has WiFi, Bluetooth with Stereo sound, InfraRed Beaming, GPS, Optical Mouse (awesome), Full QUERTY illuminated keyboard (keys light up), 256MB RAM, Camera, Camcorder, GSM capability, Speakerphone, Micro SD Memory card reader and writer, bright backlit touch-screen and a fast processor. All this and only 1/2 inch thick, less than 5-ounces and only a couple of hundred dollars... You be the judge!

I have had no battery problem after the first few days. Why after a few days, because I, like many people who get new toys, played with every feature to see how things work and of course to show-off to my friends. I had Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on all the time, sent 10 times more SMS messages than normal, was checking my email every 30-minutes, was video taping everything that moved and pictures of everything that didn't move... you get the idea. Once the honeymoon was over, I got back to normal usage and haven't had a problem yet. I do however recommend the extended battery, I haven't gotten it yet but others that have it report a big improvement, plus I held one with an extended battery and it actually improves the feel of the phone.

While I sincerely respect previous posts to this thread regarding the "sucky" battery life, let's be realistic and make judgements fairly.

Also, I wanted to mention this... Regarding the person that hasn't activated their phone because they are waiting till the 15th, Verizon has ended that practice a long time ago. They now have a very capable pro-rating capability in their system that allows you to make changes anytime. Furthermore, the law requires that cell phones be able to dial 911 at all times so the phone will still use power to keep in communication with the network but in an unoptimized form because you won't be able to do OTA (Over The Air) programming or roaming profile updates, both of which improve the efficiency of the phone's digital capability.

Hope this helps!

Great post and good points! Here's a plain question though, how IS your battery life? With normal use, does it last you throughout the day? I'm also new to the PDA world (or will be shortly), but I'm so used to my Voyager which can go for days without a plugin.

It definitely has a lot to offer, but I don't think 256MB RAM is right. I've see the VZW site list that, but from all the independent information I've seen, looks like 128MB is likely the real number. How much memory to do you show on yours?

e.g.

Posted by: SAMFIGUEROA2007

That's funny... Sorry I left that out!

I am getting a solid 6 to 7 hours per weekday.

- 5 Email Accounts checked hourly.
- 20 to 30 SMS messages per day.
- 1 to 2 hrs of voice calls per day.
- A check of CNN every couple of hours.
- 30 to 40 minutes playing Bubble Breaker.
- Less than an hour a day on Wi-Fi.
- No Music Playing. No VZ Navigator.
- No Bluetooth Devices in use.
- Carried in holster, not in a pocket.

At the end of a 6 to 7-hour day, I usually have 85% battery power remaining. Keep in mind I am not using the extended battery yet.

As you can see I am not a big time user but not everybody is, so you got to take into consideration that I dont talk excessively or use many of the other great features this phone has.

As for stand-by... About 3 days. I dont use my cell that much on weekends and usually I dont have to worry about my cell phone battery until Mondays.

Overall I would rate my battery life to be fair!

WoW,That's one rare battery u have. Is it a special made battery or what, havent seen or heard of any that can do all that and remain at 85%. This should be in the book of world records!

It might be 75%. Its kind of hard to say exactly. The Battery Power monitor is not very user-friendly. I am translating a power rating bar without ticks into a %.

UPDATE: I found a different screen that tells me the exact number, its 74%

By the way... If you think this a lot, its not! My previous line of work I used to do 4 to 5 times this plus hundreds of pictures a week. I had the treo back then.

My best friend is an engineer with Lucent who is assigned to design many tranmission solutions for the Verizon Wireless network. He has explained to me that the strength and quality of the cell sites has a direct affect on battery life. The better the signal the less energy is required. I live in the Big Apple (NYC) and the network here is powerful and has advanced switching technology that allows cell phone calls to be handled with less dual signal hand-off. In other words, calls are transferred from cell site to cell site so quickly that the phone doesn't have to work very hard while you are on the move.

Also, I am almost always connecting to Internet via Verizon Wireless Broadband High Speed so surfing and email retrieval is lightening speed. Sometimes as fast as my Cable Modem at home.

So perhaps that may be helping me too!

I'm in an area where I normally have 0-2 bars of coverage in my house (work from home), so my guess is this won't bode well for me. I'm into the extended battery idea, but if I tried the phone and ended up sending it back, I may not be able to get the refund on the battery as well - not sure on that.

Thanks for the input!

If you purchase the extended battery at the same time you buy the phone both can be returned within 30-days. But double-check/verify if you decide to go for it.

Maybe you have your reasons but if you are using the phone from your house, why would you be concerned about battery life. When I am home my cell is usually cradled.

Posted by: wilspringer

I had several phones over the past 10years and none have had a battery issue like the i770,brand new battery that came with the phone will not hold a charge for longer than 4hrs without usage and less than two if using net or phone. I had new battery from verizon mailed and same problem. I did resets no other features running the battery is drained after 3-4hrs.

i gave up on it returning mine ,great phone poor battery like i said

ill stick to the 8330 for now until something similar comes out with better battery life

That's still pretty impressive. Not sure what is different about your configuration, but you can consider yourself lucky. Far above average!

I am considering purchasing the Saga strongly... but i also like the look of the Touch Pro - though the price is ridiculous, i think.

Can anybody give me a good reason that would justify the price difference? the major differences i see between the two devices i see, is higher rez screen (Touch Pro), and Touch flo3d. the memory amounts are very similar.

given the availability of 3rd party touch apps like PointUI, SPB Mobile Shell, Winterface and others, does the TouchPro really have anything truly compelling to offer over the Saga?

sidenote: does anyone know of a better media (audio and/video) player than WMP10? the only one i know of is CorePlayer.

Thanks

Posted by: mobidutch

I don't think there is a definitive answer to your question. It depends on what features are most important to YOU. Screen resolution? Screen size? Speed? Keyboard? Each phone has its strengths and weaknesses. For the Pro the biggest plus is the VGA resolution, as well as the active developer community behind HTC devices. For the Saga I think the biggest plus is the front facing keyboard. I'd suggest making your own weighted comparison of features.

Should have my Saga in hand Friday. Currently have the EnV. How do you transfer the data/contacts from the EnV to the Saga? Will i have to carry it to the VZ store?

Another option, if you use backup assistant with your EnV, is to copy/paste your contacts from the website into Microsoft Excel, change the formatting a little (put into several discrete columns, one for name, another column for each number type, Mobile, Home, etc.) so you can save as a .csv file and then use Outlook to import the .csv file into your Outlook Contacts. Then sync phone and Outlook.

It's a little involved but probably worth it if you live far away from a VZW store or if you loathe visiting them.

Don't mind the visit but the hour wait is killer. I think I'll give you method a try first.

The Saga comes with everything you should need, if you download you contacts and info to computer and connect the Saga and sync to Saga from your computer.

I've noticed mixed results with FTouchSL on this board. For some folks, it seems to work great, and in harmony with the mouse. Others haven't had the same luck. I tried it, and it killed my optical mouse, both in D-pad and pointer modes. However, the scrolling part worked extremely well. I'd love to be able to use the program, just not at the expense of the mouse, which I've become very accustomed too.

Is there an .exe file that can be excluded from FTouchSL that will allow the mouse to work? I tried all the ones I could find that might have fit the bill (gwes.exe, KeypadStatusIndicator.exe), and nothing seemed to work. Or perhaps there's another work-around I haven't thought of? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

On a separate topic, just how bad is the camera? It does NOT have auto-focus, right? I'm just wondering how bad it is at taking a close-up picture -- for instance, of a price sticker or a UPC code -- are close-up photos totally unreadable/blurry?

Has anyone been able to successfully use the i770 (Saga) as a blue tooth modem (aka DUN, tethering)? I don't believe that the BTModem.exe application works the same as it did on the i760.

So far, my searches on this topic have come up empty. Thoughts?

Posted by: neandrad

The Saga tethers fine as a blue tooth modem in Linux. It uses channel 5 for its DUN, not sure about Windows though.

Posted by: neandrad

Not sure if it's critical, but I should note that to get BT DUN in Linux I have my phone set to "Modem and Diagnostic Driver" under the USB Setting for VzAccess Manager and I am in "Deactivated" mode under Modem Link. DSLReports' speed test lists me at about 700 down and 100 up.

Posted by: derekpowell

Dialup works fine with Windows and the Saga. You have to make sure that in the wireless manager, both Wifi and Broadband Access are not engaged. Otherwise you'll get an error. Under the menu, select "disconnect cellular data" and then try using DUN.

Posted by: tydil

Saga broadband vs wifi for registry auto-off tweak.
There is a bit of info around about this registry tweak:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings\
SuspendResume = GPRS_bye_if_device_off
CacheTime = xxx (where xxx are seconds before auto disconnect, for me the best value is 60)

(I got this text from http://www.andrewsayshello.com/wind...ections-in-wm6/ )

I was hoping anyone else who tried this could give me some input. I tried changing the registry and I also tried using the .cab file from the link above but I am unsure if this is actually working. I checked my email with the wireless, bluetooth, and the phone all off as listed in wireless manager and was able to send receive without any of that information changing. From what I can tell, the saga is using broadband to access the internet and email and then turning off right away, but since I don't have unlimited data I would like to use wifi when possible.

I'm wondering if the saga needs the #777 to dial broadband but to remove the 1501 line or replace 1501 with GPRS_bye_if_device_off.

Has anyone been able to confirm that broadband is turning on/off despite the connection screen not showing it on? What about turning wifi on/off.

Well, my i760 is starting to do some really weird crap starting this weekend. I picked up my phone and found that it preformed a hard reset all on its own! I lost everything that was in there. Now, I can't receive text messages, the phone locks up when adjusting the volume, and it is not telling me who called me when I have missed calls. I can't figure it out, but I am fed up with this phone and its problems.

I am going to go to a corporate store tonight and take a look at the Saga. From what I read, it seems like the obvious upgrade path for me from my phone. The only question I have is about the Bluetooth profiles. Verizon's site says OBEX is not supported, yet the manual on Samsung's site says it is. Which one is true?
And it still has HID support as well, right? I loved connecting my Bluetooth keyboard to my i760 and typing texts and e-mails with it.

My friend has an Epix and I love it, and I am hoping the Saga will be the same thing, just blue and with a CDMA radio.

Will Verizon give me the Saga as a replacement after the 1 year warranty? I do have insurance and this is definately a manufacter's defect... would it be covered under that?

Posted by: derekpowell

OBEX is supported. You can browse the phone from your computer as well as send photos and files from the phone.

The bluetooth keyboard also works. When I still had my Saga I would use my Logitech MX5000 keyboard and Pocket Word.

Awesome! I was getting worried since I didn't see it on Verizon's page for the phone's description.

Posted by: stiglitz

As a previous owner of an i760 which never worked right, the Saga is a big improvement. I have a few issues however:

1) I have noticed that when in messaging for one of my email accounts that doing a page down using the scroll bar I scroll down more than one page. Anybody got a fix?

2) Any new information on use of GPS, e.g., with Google Maps or Live Search? When I asked Verizon Tech Support he looked on the net and found a reference to a patch due out this quarter.

3) Is there a simple explaination of how to get Dial Up Networking working using BT?

3) Does WiFiRouter have to be put in the main memory or can it be installed to the storage memory?

Hi, I've been having trouble with my saga. It's only a few weeks old and i haven't installed any programs on it except for google maps. They guy at the Verizon store set it up for me and transferred my contacts from my old phone. I have it connected to my office's exchange server for email and calendar. Thanks for everyone's help!

1. when the phone is allowed to sleep, sometimes it randomly switches over to the 4-way nav from the mouse. Every time it does this I have to go back into the settings to turn back on my mouse. Why is this happening? is there any way to make sure that the optical mouse always stays on?

2. I've been getting some random lockups that require a reboot. it happens fairly frequently, maybe once a day. What's going on here?

3. Is there any easier way to scroll besides with the tiny scroll bars? There doesn't seem to be any page up/page down keys.

4. I'd like to add my home pop account, but I want to make sure that I'll still get my emails on my home computer. How can I make sure this is set up correctly?

My Saga never switched between mouse modes unless I accidentally pressed the button. I would recommend doing a hard reset and starting over, after carefully noting your settings, sending any draft emails, and copying your documents to a memory card. If this does not solve the problem, ask VZW to exchange it for another Saga.

The same applies to the random lockups. The only random lockuos I saw were from use of voice commands with a BT headset, and even then I never knew if I was saying the right command, or not!

Initially the lack of a page up/down button was bothersome, but eventually the optical mouse will win you over in a very big way! That being said, if anyone knows of a way to scroll down one page at a time, I would love to know it!

As another poster complained, the optical mouse will scroll more than one page after just one click in certain programs. While this can be nice, it would be nicer to be able to have a precise single page scroll if desired. Any solutions to this?

To ensure that mail is also delivered to your home computer, be sure to check the leave mail on server box on your Saga when setting up your personal email account. If you want copies of personal messages copied to your home computer, then cc: or bcc: yourself on messages which you send from your Saga, or check to see if your email provider offers IMAP access.

Well, I'm kinda late to the party, but...

I've only been able to locate one working Saga in a VZW store around Denver. It belonged to one of the sales people so I had only limited time to mess with it.

I used the Optical mouse - kinda cool, but... how do you scroll? Is the only way to place the cursor on the down arrow and then hit the [enter] button? Or what? Can someone enlighten me here?

About the 4-way verses the mouse - I could not check out the 4-way. But I did notice (I think) that the mouse "pad" didn't seem to have any button press associated with it. So, how does the 4-way mode work? What do you press?

Thank you,

-Frank

You can use the method you described, or you can scroll just as you would with a mouse and scroll bar on a desktop. Move the optical mouse on to the scroll bar, click, and move the mouse while holding the button down. I'll admit, it takes a little getting used to, but it becomes second nature pretty quickly. If I use the whole pad of my thumb, from the knuckle to the tip, I can cover a lot of real estate that way, especially with the mouse speed at its fastest setting. Try playing solitaire with the optical mouse for practice.

You can also always switch to the 4-way navigation mode for scrolling, but I'm not a huge fan of that.

Thanks! I'll give this all a shot.

Just a thought I'll throw out there. I realized that the mouse was switching over to the 4 way because I was accidentally hitting the lock key. I found in the settings where you can change the key assignments for the two side buttons. I changed mine to scroll up/down, but maybe someone has a program out there that will scroll by a page that we can assign those buttons to.

Also, now my BT headset stopped activating voice command when I hit the button.. arrrg!

I just got a Saga and started installing some of my third party apps on it. I started out by master resetting the device to make sure it was clean (got it used). I started to notice that every single 3rd party program looked awful - the fonts are all jagged, text is hard to read. Even the icons in the Programs list look terrible. True type fonts are on, and all settings are obviously the default. Stock apps look great. Has anyone else seen this?

Will Pandora run on this phone? Any other choices for streaming music?

My Samsung Saga bricked and I'm trying to figure out how or if I even can reinstall the software on the phone. It can turn on but it won't go past the "Samsung" screen. Any help would be appreciated.

Damn this message board is slow.

HARD RESET

Hold the touch pad down while inserting the stylus into the reset button. Press the send key when it says "would you like to format". All your data will be gone.

Any news on GPS unlock yet? This is getting rediculous.

Was just sent a post, from my boss, about the long awaited GPS software update...I am trying it now. Here is a URL to the update:

I wonder if Saga can be charged via USB? Shold there be a special cable or regular data sync cable will do the job?

Thanks.

Posted by: JJMG

Yes it definitely can. Though I've started having problems with my Saga battery -- it doesn't like to charge to full capacity anymore even if I charge with the regular wall charger. It charges for a while (the light is red) and then it stops charging (the light goes green) long before it reaches 100%. Not sure if the meter is just mis-calibrated or if it really isn't charging.

I have been able to get Google Maps to function with GPS properly but have not been able to get Bing to function with GPS. The Bing screen gets stuck indicating "waiting for gps" Has anybody gotten the Saga GPS to work with Bing?

Anyone know how to toggle DDTM on the Saga? I can't find the reg entry... How about the EVDO-only mode?

I've had that problem as well. It seems like Google Maps is a little better than finding a signal. I've found that if I start up GM, and let it get a lock on the GPS, then quit GM, and start up Bing, it will be able to find the signal. I'm not sure if there is some data that's getting cached by GM and then Bing can access it, but it does do the trick.

As an aside, I used an Ozone (which has Quick GPS as part of the stock ROM)for a week or so, and none of this was an issue. Both programs were able to get accurate, reliable fixes in a matter of seconds. I'm actually pretty satisfied with the GPS in the Saga, especially since it didn't have any when I bought it, but from what I've seen in other phones, there is much room for improvement.
