I have been looking aound for a phone that will allow me to use my home WIFI connection to surf the internet & receive email. I think some phones will actually send and receive calls with the WIFI connection too?? This is without using your minutes, right? I dont have or want a data package. If i can use WIFI to call it would be great, my service at home is terrible.
Can someone help me understand WIFI phones better? If i am using my WIFI connection does my provider (Alltel) charge me on top of my plan?
Thanks for any and all help you give me!!

WELL... Seeing as how alltell will be changing their plans to verizons, Verizon will allow you to go on the internet either connected to your home router or thru verizons towers without using you minutes. I dont know any carrier that will charge you minutes for being on the internet with a smart phone. If you are looking for a good phone and have alltell.. Wait till the merge is complete and buy the Samsung i760. It uses windows mobile 6 and will allow you to connect to your home wireless router via "WIFI" With the samsung i760 it will allow you to have the phone capable of recieving phone calls while being connected to WIFI. This is a hard application to find with most phones, that is why i recomend that SAM. Verizon will only charge you if you are using their towers for internet $2 per Megabite. but if your on a WIFI conection it is free and unlimited

Great, any word on when the merger will be completed?

3rd quarter if what i have heard. that means nov. thru jan. sometime. Im going to guess Verizon will want to plan the open door policy at the same time, so it will be easier to steal alltell customers lol.

Do you reckon I have teh oppurtunity to get out of my alltel contract since it is now verizon? I hate Alltel!!

If it works out like the sprint nextel merge.... Yes
What has happen in the past and im guessing will happen in the future is... If you have alltell and want to go to verizon, you can switch over without activation fee's and without cancellation fees from alltell (cuz verizon owns them now) AND here is the kicker... Since verizon has the 30 trial period, when you switch out of alltell, you can cancel verizon before 30 days.. This means you can play the system and get out of you alltell plan free of charge and go to anyone you want. But Verizon is Grand.. I have them and work for them, I have worked for sprint/nextel, att (when it was cingular) and now verizon. so far verizon has been the best and they have some awesome tricks up there sleaves for the future

Sounds great but i am not sure how the reception will be in my area. I dont expect it to change and right now it sucks! ATT is my best bet. I had it and then moved out of their "good" coverage area and went with Altell. Now I had to move back to my original area and am now stuck with Alltel.
Back to the WIFI phone, You said i can use the phone for calling when connected to my WIFI, is that what i understand?
And, what about a Starcom ppc6700, do you know anything about those phones? I am getting a new Palm 755p due to an insurance claim and thought I might be able to trade into a WIFI capapble phone.

If you want to get back to att then play the system, switch over to verizon when they allow you to, then cancel out before the 30 days.
Yes, you can call out while connected to WIFI (BUT only on certain phones)
The 6700 I had with verizon, Not a bad phone, but not a good phone by anymeans! I am not a big fan of palm at all! So if your going to switch to att I would get either the blackberry curve or I phone for sure!
