gps is navigation?

I read about the gps here, and I am still unclear of one thing... will the gps be turn by turn real time directions, like actual navigation? Or will it just be the same triangulation that we have now... but a bit more accurate? Is this truly navigation in the new model?

Well, you're confusing two things.

For navigation to work you need two things:

1. The hardware, which is the actual GPS receiver and
2. The software, which is the maps

Now, the new iphone has the built in GPS receiver, it's just that it's lacking the second part, the software application (Like iGuidance or Co-pilot on a Pocket PC). Instead, the iphone relies on Google Maps to tell you where you are and for Google Maps to work, you need to have cellphone coverage. If you're out in the sticks, you're not going to be able to use the iphone for navigation.

Thanks for the clarification. So even if I have excellent cell coverage, this can't be used for turn by turn directions right?

This is not true. As with the 2G iPhone, Google Maps will provide turn-by-turn directions.

Yes you will be able to use the gps without cell coverage. When tomtom releases their app for the iphone, you will be all set.

But its not real time... as in a car would have, correct?

This would work only for the 3g version or for us first generation iPhone'rs as well?

not true, agps just helps the gps find you location, if your in the sticks, it will just take a longer time finding where your at....much longer time.

Yes, steine is wrong. You can have no reception at all and still find your location. As far as turn by turn, google maps will do that but you have to press the next button after each step.

I believe Google maps can support turn by turn e.g Virgin America has Google guidance and so will the iphone.

Thats my opinion please take it with a grain of salt

Guys, I am currently using ATT Tilt and it has A-GPS. A-GPS simply means that it will use whatever is available (Cell tower, WiFi, etc.) to simply lock your position initially. Initial locking is faster with A-GPS enabled. Once your GPS is locked, it does not matter where you are, you'll get the real-time tracking (unless you are inside a long tunnel or something).

With A-GPS enabled, my Tilt locks within 15-20 seconds. Without it enabled, it takes upto 1 or 2 minutes.

So, to clarify, GPS in the new iPhone is a real GPS and when 3rd party apps like Tomtom or Garmin come out, you won't need your data service to use the GPS unless you want traffic information.
