3G iPhone -3G compatability carriers

Let's say we can unlock the 3G iPhone, which are the compatible 3G carriers in the US the 3g iPhone will work.

If you buy the new IPhone at Apple you are required to sign the 2 year AT&T agreement.
Is Apple doing the same for all the other countries? i.e a 2 year contract with the selected carrier?

If not I might buy one on one of my business trips overseas.

the new iphone supports 850/1900/2100 wCDMA. so that means UK, USA, australia, and then all the eurasia areas. the phone will probably be locked to those networks where its allowed. many countries do not do contracts like the states.
