Why didn't he? There are definitely prototypes/production models out there that bloggers have played with (but were not able to take pictures of). I want to see real pictures of the actual iPhone 3G!!!

I guess it's just to build up the hype a little more perhaps.

Those are accurate pictures of the iPhone 3G. I want to see *real* pictures (taken with a camera). Not some simulated pictures of the iPhone 3G that were projected onto a wall.

Laptopmag got some hands on time and has some photos of the white one. It looks pretty much identical to the images on Apple.com though.

However, I saw a CNBC interview with Jobs and he DID have a handset on camera.

Like you could tell the difference if he quickly whipped out the first-gen iPhone. The proof is there, everyone else saw it and touched it afterwards. That's good enough for me. It'll be there July 11th.
