HOT (possibly) INFO: From AT&T CS Rep - iPhone 3G CAN be ordered online in the future

Folks:

I just spoke to an AT&T CS Rep. The "original" focus of the call was the specific effects of an iPhone 3G contract extension on MY current plan (family plan).

During the call I told her that there's NO WAY I'll camp out of ANY store. I don't want to appear on the local news like every other "fanboy" (I like being a "closet fanboy")

Anyway, here's what she told me (remember, this IS NOT "official word" but from an AT&T CS rep:

1. At SOME POINT, you CAN order AND pay for an iPhone 3G from AT&T's website.

2. During the process you'll need to select a plan. For upgraders like me, you'd need to select the SAME PLAN you currently have.

3. What about in-store activation? She said that all iPhone 3G online orders will be delivered IN YOUR NAME to the local AT&T Corporate Store.

Now, this doesn't help the eBayers or the unlockers. However, for those of us who DON'T want to wait in line, this will "guarantee" that you'll get a handset (although MAYBE NOT on Day One). But when it arrives, it's in your name (since you've already paid for it). It gets sent to the store ONLY because of the activation tether.

FYI the rep sounded sincere ... it SOUNDED like she was reading off some internal document.

But again -- good news for us closet fanboys who'd rather not haul lawn chairs onto the sidewalks!

Saves waiting in line. Also saves the possibility that the store runs out.

Because you've already paid for the handset.

That doesn't make sense. Why would they send it to the store? You can "sign" contracts over the phone just fine. Thats all Apple/AT&T need .... Activate the plan on your line and send you out the door .... Once you connect the phone to itunes it should know that the plan you have is a valid 3G plan.

I agree it doesn't make sense.

OTHER THAN a way to honor the policy of "in-store activation only."
