*****Email MMS*****

The fact that the iPhone 3G won't be able to do MMS either started to frustrate me. So I decided to try and find a way around the fact that I can't send or receive MMS messages on my iPhone. I did some research and came across a fairly simple technique that you can use to send people (who already have MMS on their phone) MMS messages. I am aware that you can hack the iPhone and install applications like swirlymms, etc to enable MMS on the iPhone, but this technique requires no hacking.

Most of you probably already know about this technique, but I decided to create this thread to introduce this technique to those who may not have come across it yet

In summary, this technique uses the iPhone's ability to email pictures. You basically email a picture to your friend's phone number and they receive it as an MMS message.

So heres how to do this:

First take a picture of wut you want to send. If you already have a picture in the iPhone, then simply go to that picture by locating it in the iPhone's camera role.

When you are at the picture, press the button in the bottom left of the screen (the one that looks like a square with an arrow pointing out of it). This will insert the picture into an email on the iPhone.

In the "TO" field of the email message, you need to enter the person's 10 digit phone number (their number including area code). The phone number should be followed by the standard prefix for their carrier. For example, for people with ATT, the prefix is xxxxxxxxxx@mms.att.net. If you do not know what carrier your friend is using, you can use the prefix xxxxxxxxxx@teleflip.com and it will automatically figure out what carrier they are using and send the MMS to them correctly.

When you have finished typing their number followed by the correct prefix in the "TO" field of the email message, then you can simply press send and it will send the message as an MMS to their phone.

A few things to note:
When you send an MMS to someone this way, they can't simply reply back to the MMS message because it wont have come from your phone number, it came from your email remember. If they want to respond to an MMS that you sent them, they should reply to your email so you will get the response in the form on an email instantly on your iPhone and it will even vibrate ur iPhone when you get the email response. Or they can reply by simply sending you a text message. In other words, they can't jusy simple reply to the MMS that you sent them because you wont get their response, they have to either email or text your phone number to respond to you. I never said this technique was perfect, but it will work for me for now until (if) MMS gets added to the iPhone.

If someone has MMS on their phone and wants to send you a picture, they can't because the iPhone doesnt support MMS. Instead, they should just email you the picture because you will instantly get the email on your iPhone and your iPhone will even alert you when you get the email.

Wow, all that work instead of just having rainbow apple include the MMS capability?

Why not just NOT buy the iphone until jobs comes down to earth and includes this worldwide standard feature?

I agree that its a very standard feature that should have been included on the iPhone to begin with. But this method isn't all that complicated. It justs looks complicated because of my long tutorial. Bascially, email a picture to your friend's phone number followed by the correct prefix like "@mms.att.net" and you're done.

That is the longest and most complete list of mms addresses I've seen. And a good post to boot.

Just too bad that it doesn't work with all carriers. Alltel being one of them, although it may change, being that they were just bought out by Verizon.

I agree with the above poster, why not just add it. If this is a true multi media device, it should have it. Email is considered a business type feature. Most business smartphones have both. I'd actually like to know the reason why from the man himself. So many conferences and keynotes, yet I've yet to come across the developers speak up about the issue. I sure their reasons are jest, but them simply ignoring it and not giving the reasoning to the public is somewhat frustrating.

The more frustrating part is the incoming part of it.

Lol wuts a solicit input? Oh and by the way, I didnt make that list of carriers with the prefixes, I copy and pasted it from another forum that I found it on...lol

I wouldn't mind this solution if all my attempts to send to a Verizon customer didn't get rejected and sent back.

Maybe I just don't get it, but I don't see what all the fuss over MMS is all about. I can understand having MMS for a non-smartphone. But smart phones have email. Why pay to send/receive MMS messages when you can just use email for free.

The only reason I can see wanting to have MMS on an Iphone is for those who have unlocked it and are using it without a data plan.

Because for people who don't have iphones, WMphones, etc that don't have "qwerty" keyboards; it can be Pain in the *** to type in an email address.

Or someone who has a standard cell phone, and sends out a pic of their kid, or something they were sent that they found funny. And here we are, with whats supposed to be the "top of the heap" cell phone, and we cant view it. Not a huge deal, but it would be nice to have.

My fiance has the LG Shine and she just saved my email as a contact. Problem solved.

Posted by: flyingdutchman

MMS is a holdover feature from when most people did not have email-capable phones. Now that that is changing, hopefully MMS will go away. It is not a good solution for sending pictures. Email is light-years ahead of MMS.

Posted by: rockyjr

The OP did a great job to provide an extensive list and work around to help iPhone users send mms through email, so thanks!

I was very interested in the bit about teleflip.com being a universal carrier detector that can forward sms/mms.

I tested this by sending an email from my laptop to my iPhone. Unfortunately, the message was returned as undeliverable. Teleflip tried to send my email through Alltel.

Alltel is my previous/original carrier for the cell number I currently use. I am guessing that teleflip cannot accurately trace a number that has been ported from one carrier to another. So, for all those diehards that have stayed true to their original cell phone carriers, teleflip will help!

On another note, this makes no sense, the mms addy you listed, churner, is the same addy the OP gave for Virgin Mobil that you are stating is sms.

I think one of the attractions about MMS is that it's like a text message in regards to it's delivery. By this I mean if you send an email to someone with images attached, you have to let them know to check their email or wait until they get around to checking it. Given users can set up their phone to check every minute for new email but people have also learned that this drains the battery faster so they may have it set to download once an hour or other time intervals. With MMS it shows up on their phone shortly after you have sent it. I think most people keep their phones near them so when the phone recieves the MMS, it will do it's alert notice and the person will pick up the phone and check out the MMS. This is the biggest issue for me regarding the MMS, it's just more convenient than email.

Posted by: Medina

It still doesn't change the fact that I can't receive MMS.

True I will agree in that sense MMS is more convenient. However, the problem becomes, what now? You can't really do anything with that image except have it on your phone. Email allows you to do anything you want with it. Download it to your phone or a computer, print it, etc.

As for not being able to receive MMS, that does stink, but hopefully it will push people to add email addresses to contacts so they can email them to you instead. That is what I have done.

i would settle for program i can have that would open when i click the viewmymessage link and then have it auto type in the crazy code and password they give me when i get a message, flipping back and fourth sucks.

i would pay for that.

*UPDATE*

Since I created this thread, I thot that I wud add an update since I have seen some threads where people are unsure of whether this method still works with the iphone 3g. Some people are saying that it doesnt work when they try it. But I am happy to let you know that I have fully tested this method and when I send an mms thru this method from my iphone to another person they receive the mms just fine and when they reply to the mms it get the response in my email, just like its supposed to work. So once again, im confirming that this "email mms" methods still works with the iphone 3g

Posted by: Nastronomical

Is their an app with a drop down menu that will allow you to chose which cell company to send the email mms? I know japanse keitai has that ability.

Posted by: Aridon

Late to the party but thank you!

Posted by: djransom

Thank you OP for posting the addresses. I needed some of those.

Posted by: Eug

I used to do this years ago but found it didn't work consistently with some carriers. Sometimes it would work, and sometimes the email just disappeared into oblivion. I haven't tried lately though.

Also, what about the size of the image?

Posted by: chak_dey

i been using the email method since last year. The only problem before was saving the pics on to the iphone from the email, but with 2.0 you can save the pics from email, which is great! Now only if there was a way to save the videos from the email on to the iphone.

Lol you're not ignorant, its an easy mistake. And yes you would be correct in saying that the iphone cant send OR receive mms, and thats why i created this thread to demostrate a way around that which works almosts as well

Posted by: RF9

I noticed something else the iPhone can't do.
On other phones I can send an SMS to an email address me@mydomain.com
But on the iPhone they don't allow you to enter alphabetical characters. Only numbers. So I can't send an SMS to an email address.

Not really a big deal, but I found this was a great way to send an SMS to an email address, then when that person responded I'd get it back as an SMS.
It's also a great way to see what the email address to your SMS.

I know this topic doesn't really belong in this thread.

Posted by: ken.vs.ryu

why would you be against having mms on the iPhone?

I send to vzw customers all the time with no problems. Double check and make sure you are sending it to xxx.xxx.xxxx@vzwpix.com

Posted by: alaiwy

So, I have a couple questions. In the scenario where a person W/O data services put myemail@gmail.com in an SMS that will send it via THEIR sms but comes to my email. Is that how they have to do it?

Cause, I don't have a problem sending them SMS, but what if somebody wants to send me an SMS (to be routed to my email). They can just send it to myemail@gmail.com and it should get there from their sms correct?

In the last few days it seems like my friends have all of suddend discovered MMS, having to go to that stupid site is a pain because I have to write down the ID and password listed in the text message. They never messed with MMS before but once I got my iPhone they are all over it... figures.

While I can appreciate the effort that went into compiling that list, in reality you've made it supremely easy for someone to mass spam us. It's true that all of those addresses can be found by other means, it's just made it that much easier.

That's the biggest complaint I have about being able to email -> phone. In fact, I started getting more spam about the time the thread was started, even though I have email to text ability turned off.

Does anyone happen to know the MMS prefix for the Japanese carrier DOCOMO? I have searched on google but can't seem to come up with it.

You can control this by setting your preferences here:
http://mymessages.wireless.att.com/
You can disable the MOBILENUMBER@txt.att.net address and create aliases to be used instead so it's harder to spam you.
You can also set allowed and blocked lists.

Posted by: CocheseUGA

It only reduces the email-based spam, it by no means stops it.

I get 5-10 a day, and there is no way to figure out who is sending them.

Posted by: RF9

I thought the specific problem you were having was them sending you email based SPAM based on the general carrier formula (phone number)@carrier.com. That's the only reason I suggested it.
Knock on wood, I haven't had one yet.
I did read recently in some article somewhere that SMS based SPAM is only just beginning and will eventually become horrifically common unless carriers start finding a way to block them. Apparently it's a massive problem in China. They busted some guy that was responsible for something like 80% of all SMS based SPAM and it temporarily reduced the problem.

Edit: I guess my memory is all screwed up. I guess it's one company in china that sends 80% of the SPAM, and it's legit?
http://www.intomobile.com/2008/03/1...m-in-china.html
Crazy.

Posted by: CocheseUGA

It is email-based, from everything I've read. Generic 100xxxx from numbers. Had to block texts on my other two numbers because I'd get a bill each month for 50-100 messages on those two lines.

Although, come to think of it I've not received a single one since I activated my iPhone. Weird.

Why didn't you just list the @teleflip.com one? If that one will figure it out automatically, why would you even NEED to know?

I did list that one and i did mention that it can be used to automatically find the correct carrier, but keep in mind that if u use the teleflix one then it will send a little advertisement with a link to their website with the mms email. also its a little faster i think if u know the specific carrier.

I know you put it. I just simply meant you could just of put that one. but I see what you mean.

Posted by: cue003

Anyone successful at finding/using one for a METRO PCS recipient?

Posted by: sc0rpio

This is in response to the earlier posts about emailing as a better way instead of MMS. MMS/Text is a very convenient alternative to push email. In my opinion, Apple decided not to include MMS because they (AT&T/Apple) want iPhone users to rely on the data service for sending/receiving multimedia. If they allowed MMS, many users would not sign up for the data plan and would opt for the less expensive messaging plans (or not sign up for either...gasp!).

It's the same reason why iphones & iPods will never have built-in FM tuners. It would distract users from purchasing music from the iTunes store. In other words, it was a business decision so they can make more money off of us.
