iPhone Restore Help

I just sold my iPhone 1 on eBay, and want to restore it for the new guy. I have read all about how to get my stuff off the phone storage, and will do that. But what I really want to know, is if I restore it, does this erase the contacts from my SIM card? I want to pop this SIM card in another phone while I wait on the 3G iPhone, and want to have all my contacts.
Any suggestions/ hints?
