Quick Question About Old Iphone

With the news that the 3G iPhone will not be available for use with gophone, does that mean anything for the original iPhone?
If I were to buy an old one off of eBay, fail the credit check, then sign up for gophone, would that ever change? Would they suddenly shut it off, and tell me I need a contract?
