Same Question Frustrations / Do A Search First Before Asking

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: fbakirdan

Gentlemen & Ladies:

I have been on this site for awhile now and find nothing more frustrating than someone new jumping in after they get their new P800 and asking the same questions that have been asked over and over again. I don't mean to be critical but I check this site every few hours when able, to see what is going on. But in the past few months, as the P800 becomes more mainstream people are finding this wonderful forum and asking the same questions over and over again without doing a simple search. I know its very easy to just do a post and see if anyone out there can give you a quick answer but please be considerate to those of us who have been on this wonderful forum (Resource) a bit longer then you by doing this one favor.

So in short a simple search will probably get you the answer you are looking for without taking up the posts with the same questions.

I hope no one takes this post the wrong way as it is intended to educate new members.

Ditto. It's especially "interesting" when people claim to have "searched extensively" for things when it's clear that they haven't or are just plain no good at searching.

A simple entry of "Cingular" in the P800 section will bring up dozens of threads with settings. It's really (not always) not rocket science.

This is a helpful, friendly forum, mostly. There's a lot of support from members to new members. But, as said above, not searching first not only makes the forum cumbersome to read (with all the new threads about "old" subjects) but it does, to some degree, take advantage of the goodwill support that most of us try to provide.

i second that.
and that 'search' button has been nicely colored in different color.

Once again another question on another new post that has been answered in the past and could have been easly found doing a search....... GPRS and Battery Life?? Why oh why do they keep doing this......

Gee, I feel remiss for not having an image attached! Ah well, I suffer in privacy.

In truth, I wouldn't pull my hair out over this. (Don't have much to pull!) Every board I know of has the same problems. And people will come on and not search. You can suggest it, ignore it but it ain't goin' away.

It just doesn't make sense...... I guess they are just lazy and want a quick answer. It maybe helpful if others joined in, in not answering these questions and just suggested to these individuals to do a search instead....

Yea I took that pick back in January with the P800.... Just thought everyone would like the fact that the man that is complaining would show his face and not hide behind his avatar....

I agree. I don't really feel compelled to reply for the answer. Someone else will, so I just ignore it.

I agree with what is said here but, even I found it hard to do a search a few days ago. Considering my self a veteran of this forum. I did a search for "Krusell" and only 1 thread showed up, and that was the BS digital thread. I searched 3 or 4 times but with the same result. I went back to as far back as I could in search days but the same thing, only 1 thread. Some noobs say they searched and couldn't find an answer and they might be right.

But that's just it... Being lazy doesn't get you a quick answer.

There is just no logic to it.

in my opinion, if you dont like something you see (repeated post), dont bother respond to it or read it, in this is my 2cents.

and please dont make this issue bigger then it is.

some people will help a person from being mugged, others will not.

Posted by: fbakirdan

OK, I see everyones point concerning this but it's just a pain to see in the very first ten posts the same questions that have been asked and answered before. I am only suggesting that these individuals do a simple search before starting a new post. Don't forget that God helps those who help themselves. Just a thought....
As for a mugging I would be there in a heart beat. I work in NYC everyday have seen it all so I would be on the scene like Batman.......

How about regular contributors agree to respond to such new threads that are obvious products of laziness with three simple simple words: "Do a search". Let the poster figure it out.

On this board, there is no excuse for being a newbie. They know how to create a new thread, they OWN a P800 (generally not a phone for the uninitiated), and they are almost certainly adults. However, we can assume the most extreme scenario, where the poster in fact (and against all odds) doesn't know any better.

This saves everyone time and aggravation, and educates at the same time without being rude.

I'm in...

From now on I will just post the words "Do a search"..........

That's All Folks.

Who cares if someone wants an answer to a question that has been asked before. There's been a few times where I've tried to search and the feature is disabled. If you get upset about people posting questions that have been answered before...you need a life.

I'm looking for a life right now on Ebay. Some of the deals look too good to be true. One guy's offering a life with free upgrades for the life of that life. The price is right but I'm not sure just what "getting flashed" will entail.

Well I guess I need a Life. Does anyone have one that I could purchase for a good price. Just can't take it anymore... I hate to buy one off of ubid or ebay, who can you trust... That's it I need to move on, this topic is just taking up way to much of my old life.

Actually I'm not upset at all. It is merely an efficient and polite way of educating others, just as we all were once educated.

Additionally, it is polite and thoughtful vis-a-vis the moderators and Howard, so that we don't waste Howard's bandwidth, and moderators don't have to wade through these additional threads that add no value to the boards when they repeat the same questions and responses.

As for the search feature being disabled - those who have tried the search and found it FUBAR have mentioned it in their original posts, and that is OK in my book. But I haven't noticed this problem in a while...

Afrocreame, some of the people on this board spend a lot of their precious time helping others by answering all of their questions. Not using the search function is a slap in their face. Perhaps you would feel the same if you had hundreds of posts (which you and I don't), many of which were written to help others. I'm not trying to upset you, just suggesting that you put yourself in their shoes.

These little bourgeois bits of politeness are what makes life so much more pleasant. Consider this: if each person agreed to do one very small kind thing every day, that would be an additional 6 BILLION acts of kindness each day. How do you feel when someone goes out of their way to hold a door open for you? How much better would this world be then?

Yes, these acts of kindness are small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things. But for most of us, that is the limit of our ability to shape our world.

Sorry for the long response, but I think this is one of the most important lessons to be taught and learned in this cynical world we have created. This is especially true in an anonymous forum, where our trangressions cannot be linked to us - this is where we prove we are something more than sentient animals.

what is this 1950 or are we in 2003!!!

every new tread should go first into a search function and once the search returns less then 1 finding the poster can post his question but if it returns more - he would still be able to post the questions once he is not satisfied with his findings but he would have to overwrite the post - extra step

i am sure there is a bunch of start guys out there that could provide horward with that fix.....
