GPS on iPhone

A few questions on the GPS functionality on the new and old iPhone.

1) Will GPS on the new iPhone be part of the data plan, or will we be expected to pay extra? (i.e. per month)

2) Is GPS on the old iPhone possible? If so, is it free or pay?

Thanks

It's part of the data plan. No extra charge for GPS.

No, there's no GPS hardware in the current iPhone, so it can't receive the signal from the GPS satellites. Only the less accurate Cell ID / Wi-Fi based positioning.

Well, the new SDK specifically prohibits real-time route guidance, which indicates to me that either AT&T or Apple have a service planned for the iPhone which will naturally cost extra.

GPS on the old iPhone will be dependant on Apple uncrippling the Bluetooth to allow connections to bluetooth GPS units.

^ or a downloadable application that will cost extra (a la the garmin xt program for s60 phones - costs about $100)

EDIT - i would be perfectly happy with this option - so long as garmin gets into the mix

That is not correct, the piece you read is basically word for word the disclaimer that came with google maps and google earth. The context is a little screwy, and up in the air to interpretation, but it most likely aludes to the fact that you cannot tie in guidance/iphone into other systems where autonomous guidance would be obtained from the iphone (like say autopilot on boats and planes and such)

With Assisted GPS, the only data retrieved from the internet is current satellite positions, relevant to where you are (i.e., what 12 satellites are on your side of the earth).

Keep in mind one thing: you CAN use the iPhone 3G's GPS WITHOUT network assistance. The drawback being that the handset's chip will have to figure out what satellites are available and where. That means a decent GPS lock (>4 satellites) will take LONGER without A-GPS, but will still work fine.

OMG... its one of the things that stopped me buying a Ophone in the first place... the fact that the bluetooth has been crippled... Any chance this will be addressed in the 2.0?
