Jail break or Unlock 3G??

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I've heard somewhere that when the 3G iphone comes out it will be easily unlocked and/or jailbroken, is this true?? It was something about the new 2.0 something, does anyone know anything about this???

I want to get the iphone on my second line ( I get a fan discount ) then just us it on my primary line that already has medianet max.

In my opinion, that's a lot of blind optimism you're hearing.

The first iPhone hardware platform took months to unlock -- and the first methods were not pretty at all (the very first one required opening your phone and making hardware modifications inside). No one has seen the new hardware yet - so any predictions are simply wild-*** guesses.

Jailbreaking might happen quickly - they've already seen the v2.0 firmware since it is getting released in updates with the SDK. But unlocking, given that no one knows what the new hardware is like -- it's anybody's guess.

Yeah Toomer but what about iPwned and Bootneuter....both programs are claiming to successfully unlock and jailbreak all iPhones 2.0 firmwares from here on out

Zibri managed to get firmware 2.0 beta jailbroken and unlocked 3 months ago.

I also read iPwned was supposed to be able to jailbreak the 2.0 firmware. I guess we won't really know until it's released or someone does it with a review model.

I think that firmware 2.0 for current iPhone will certainly be jailbroken and unlocked. However, with the new 3G, additional security measures could have been implemented, that even if the firmware is hacked, probably changes with the bootloader or something could prevent the phones from being hacked. Also, I believe that the main issue wouldn't be hacking the iphone, but it would be getting one without a contract, because the activation will be done on store.

That worked for the first firmware 2.0 release that was readily available. But they've had seven releases of the SDK total, and I thought I remembered reading on TUAW last week that they haven't been able to jailbreak the last three or four. Not sure how much effort they may have been putting into it though.

Of course they can "claim" they'll be able to break it immediately. Heck, there were a lot of people "claiming" that they'd have the iPhone unlocked within its first week of availability. And let's not forget they got stuck on the v1.1.2 -> v1.1.3 point for a couple months, did they not?

And all of the discussion is pointless anyway, because no one has any clue whatsoever what sort of new countermeasures Apple may have put into the new hardware platform. And that's what this thread was about - jailbreaking or unlocking on the 3G phone. Not unlocking firmware 2.0 by itself.

I bet the jailbreaking won't be as much as a priority as the unlocking will be. I mean if it's true you have to activate in store then they may not care as much if people jailbreak since it will eliminate a lot of the unlocking going on. So I guess we'll see what develops.

I'm just gonna stick with 1.1.4 until they have it all figured out. Problem solved

Maybe I'll just switch my primary line to my line 2 and get the iphone on my primary, then few days after that I'll just cancel the iphone plan and tell them I sold it and will be using my n95 again. Medianet should still work with 3g iphone.

you can jailbreak an iPhone 3G now. I haven't got to use mine much but I have some sites and other resources on how to jailbreaka 3g.

Mines been working fine when i mess around with it putting my sim in but not using it as my main phone yet and might never.

only annoying thing is that it sometimes asks for my apple or aol username and pass for some things and i tried my aim sn and pass but that doesnt' work.

where do i get the user name and pass?

I just want to jailbreak it so I can put some apps on it and stuff.

doesn't seem to be any threads about this on hofo surprisingly.

Are you joking? There is a whole sub-forum "iPhone Hacking and Unlocking" on this site.

ok never saw it and usually hofo seems to be pretty lite and you have to look elsewhere for more in depth stuff like xda developers.com for htc stuff
