iphone 3G and Outlook Calendar sync ?

I tried to search but can't find anything on this specifically.

With the constant hype surrounding this on the internet, I can't seem to find any answers on Outlook Calendar and Contacts synchronization.

I have heard of the whole sdk movement and the exchange integration, but do any of you know if and WHEN the iphone will simply sync calendar and contacts ?

that's all i really need it to do.

I wish the iphone used a sep software similar to the blackberry desktop manager instead of iTunes.

It's coming with the version 2.0 firmware which will launch July 11th -- or possibly earlier, according to some news.

Doesn't the iPhone already do this via iTunes as the conduit?

Oops -- I assumed the OP was asking for OTA ActiveSync or something similar.
