Current iPhone prices:

8GIG = $299
ATT = $240 ($20*12 months)
Total 1st year = $539

16GIG= $399
ATT = $240
Total 1st year = $639

iPhone 3G prices:

8GIG = $199
ATT = $360 ($30*12 months)
Total 1st year = $559

16GIG = $299
ATT = $240
Total 1st year = $659

Difference = $20

So Apple and ATT will not discount the new iPhone 3G just like they did with the current iPhone. Anyone can walk into an Apple Store and buy one, but when you activate it, ATT will require the higher Data Plan and another 2 Years. But ATT will be making an extra $120 a year off anyone who upgrades to the iPhone 3G.
Unless ATT's 3G Network is everywhere in the USA by July 11th, I myself wouldn't pay the extra $10 a month for the 3G version.
I travel a lot and will have to weigh in the options of going for the 3G model.
Sooo, IMO, the current iPhone might actually be worth more in the future. Since they no longer make them, and 3G is not in your area or you just couldn't care less about 3G, or you have kids that use the iPhone but don't want to spend the extra $$ for 3G ect ect ect. I can see that keeping the iPhone 1.0 could be a plus.
This past week I put my 2 8 and 16 gig iPhones on Craigs List, and could have sold both for just about full retail to several people. Why would anyone want the old iPhone now when in a month a new one is coming out??
I've decided to hold on to my 1.0 version for a little while longer.

Unfortunately your figures are off because the prices on the EDGE iPhones were not $299 and $399 before they ran out of stock. They were $399 and $499 for brand new phones (not refurbs). So you're missing an extra $100 for the original phone in your figures.

And also the two year contract requirement so what's the point of a 1 year calculation?

I might pay $20, but I'll be saving comparatively soooooooooo much time when I'm surfing on the train, on the toilet, on the bed, on the couch, on the floor...
