3G iPhone vs Samsung i900. iPhone's Shortcomings Covered?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: jacka$$1

Although it's a "beat-a-dead-horse" point that the 3G iPhone's superslick UI and multitouch screen is hands-down the best in the industry, there's no denying the fact that there's some painfully obvious hardware/software shortcomings that Stevie and company arrogantly ignored. Some may even think he's trapped in his little world and doesn't wanna be bothered with what the competitors are doing.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Samsung i900, I've listed some links below. If there's a way to combine the iPhone's smooth UI, multitouch screen, and display resolution with the i900's hardware and features we're all used to (like MMS, A2DP, video recording, voice dialing, bluetooth file sharing, memory slot, replaceable battery,...etc, etc), then we would have the PERFECT phone.

Lemme know what you think? (btw, this is coming to AT&T branded as "i907")

I've already pointed this out in another thread but those screenshots show an awfully dark screen on the Samsung. Hope it's brighter than that in real life.

I am looking for an iPhone killer. Still haven't found it. Maybe when some of this new hardware comes out and Android runs on it we will actually have something to choose from. But I know this much: I'm NOT going to use a stylus with a phone.

Actually, it looks pretty bright. Check out the UK preview video.

The i900 looks like a great device. and like you said, if we could get the iPhone OS on there, it would be killer...
however,
every phone I have bought because the specs looked great has turned out to be a total disappointment. I have since learned that usability is my number one priority. Heck, even the n95 still out-specs the iPhone 3G, but I've used an n95 and came away disappointed. After using the iPhone for the past 8 months, I don't think I could go back to another device.

True that. The iPhone was designed for folks who prefer a no-nonsense, stable, easy-to-use phone. It's for people who don't wanna be bothered with bells and whistles. It just has to work. That's why I mentioned that if we can merge the iPhone UI with i900 features, it'll be perfect.

We'll just have to see the review on the i900. As far as the videos are concerned, its UI is pretty darn close (90%) to the iPhone.

It could be a great phone if it was not running windows mobile. Every windows mobile phone that I have every used has been slow as h*ll. The iphone may not have everything under the sun, but the UI is fast and thats what important to me.

Nice Specs, but how many times would I need to reboot it or have it freeze up on me at the worst moments? Also how quickly will it drain the 1,480mAh battery?

Check out the videos of the UI in action and decide for yourself. I'm still waiting for someone to post a FULL review.

Dunno about the battery life or freezing issues. I'm hoping that prior to ATT's release, they would have tested it thoroughly.

Well the UK video ended with the reviewer saying it was "definitely one for the windows fanbois rather than someone who wants something consumery and graphically user interfacey to use", his words not mine which seems a bit of a slap at its win mobile underpinnings. If interface is really important to you it is going to be hard to decide if you like a phone or not w/o using it yourself though.

True that. I like the "INTERFACEY" malarchy and other unique words the English use. It's so quaint. But he is correct about the WinMo interface. I have a feeling most users of the i900 will stick with the Touchwiz UI as opposed to going to the WinMo UI for navigation.

The side-by-side does make the screen look dark by comparison to the iPhone. That aside, the UK video does make the screen look bright. The UI looks great, I might even like it a bit better. What I did not see in the videos was much actual web surfing. The contacts pages were not in English so I could not tell is they include full street, city and state addresses or not but imagine they do. It has so many of the features that are important to me that the iPhone does not have (or may have to purchase separately as apps). And you gotta L-U-V how the side-by-side shows the i900 in landscape text mode!!!

I have read the windows OS is less stable than Apple's but I have to say that this looks impressive enough for me to wait for it. The 3G isn't going anywhere. I was going to take my brother's 1st gen iPhone (no 3G signal here) but I still do not know how AT&T will treat that for service. I wouldn't want to be forced into a 2 yr contract on a 1 yr old phone. And this phone has actual features I can use instead of just payng for Apple's U.I.
