(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I know there have been many posts on ringtones but I cant find the answer to my problem. I am on a PC with XP my iPhone is up to date and a virgin. My ring tones are in the m4r format and in my computer as follows;
My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Ringtones. The will not drag and drop, import out of that folder. Any suggestions or help will be appreciated. So flamethrowers please extinguish your fire. I need some help not a scorched A**. Can this be done with out jailbreaking or a third party app????

Get Itunes. Open The M4r With Itunes And Sync Your Phone.

How did you create the ringtones? I am asking because I have custom ringtones on my virgin ATT iPhone that I made (not purchased) in iTunes (from my own music; not music purchased from the iTunes store). They are .m4r and I can move them around etc........ I just need more info and maybe I can help you because I finally got all this to work without any hacks to my phone.

Once you add the .m4r file into the iTunes library, it should show up as a syncable ringtone when you connect your iPhone.

Seriously, if you search the forums, we could avoid having such a cluttered forum full of pointless question threads that have already been answered 100x over.

Maybe it would be easier to search the forums if people didn't clutter this forum with redundant posts about hacking, jailbreaking, unlocking, and speculations about 3G phones. It is crazy how many mindless posts have been made this week questioning what ATT and Apple may do on July 11th. (Not to mention all the threads started leading up to June 9th!)

To actually log in daily and see current posts that actually apply to this forum has become a joke. I can't believe no mods even watch over this forum and move posts where they need to be.

A 3G phone area should be created.

To come here and purposely point out the OP should have searched is pretty pointless since a request for flamethrowers to extinguish their fires was made. Especially when the OP mentioned they have tried to find the answer to their question.

The one good thing about you replying is that a relevant iPhone question was posted and it keeps getting bumped to the top of all the useless, pointless, redundant 3G iPhone threads.

I did search the forums. The point I tried to make is that they will not even go into the iTunes library. The conversion to the .m4r format was done per the instructions I found on the forum. When I double click on the file it will not open with iTunes.

What is amazing is how you "experts" use the word pointless and redundant for you maybe for other maybe not.

The person posted because they could not figure it out!
What is more amazing that others went in to read and post.

Then post on being redundant?

How about just help people that need help and if not move on.

Last I checked it was a public forum and built on the base of posting.

Just amazing all the so called Experts here...that down people!

IRINGER, best solution by far, import your song, time the clip, export it, when you export automatically goes into your ringtone folder in itunes.

Same here. It seems Apple may have blocked this now?

I'm on the latest iTunes btw, v 7.6.2.9

You've got it all wrong. I am not bashing the OP. I am trying to help. I was addressing mongoos150's reply to the OP. My rant was about all the other posts about the 3G iPhone clogging up the forum which hinders true questions like the OP's here. And trust me, I am no expert!!!

Alright I found a link that explains the process in detail. Worked with my 1.1.4 iPhone and iTunes 7.6.2.9

This is how I do it with a virgin iPhone on ATT with all latest updates for iPhone and iTunes:

Open iTunes
1. Right click on a non purchased iTunes song (ie something you uploaded from CD or another source other than iTunes store-if from iTunes store, save the song to CD first and then reload into iTunes before proceeding.)
2. Click on Get Info
3. Go to options tab
4. Check off start time and stop time
5. Enter in these fields a 30 second or less clip from the song that you want to use as the ringtone i.e. if it's first 30 seconds of the song then have 0:00 for start time and 0:30 for end time.
6. Click on Okay to close dialog box
7. Right click on song
8. Click on 'Convert to AAC'
9. The clip you just created will be saved in iTunes, in music for the amount of time you selected with start and stop time
10. Drag this clip onto your desktop
11. Rename this clip .m4r on your desktop
12. Go back to iTunes and DELETE the clip you just dragged out so the aac .m4a file is no longer in iTunes
13. Go back to desktop and double click the renamed ringtone, it will open in iTunes in your ringtone folder
14. Hook up iPhone and sync or if you manually manage music in iTunes then drag the new ringtone to your iPhone
15. Go back to original song, go back into info and uncheck start and stop time so the next time you play the song from your iTunes library it plays the entire song instead of the 30 second or less clip you just made.

It is very important to make sure the AAC file you made is deleted in iTunes before you try to import the renamed .m4r clip you made.

PM with any questions. Good luck!

Edit: I was typing all this while buckeye posted....sorry we overlapped.

Thanks rockyjr for your time to put the detailed instructions on the format. I am sure they will help. My opinion for what it is worth...That's what a forum is about. Those posessing knowledge sharing it with those who ask for it. To those who would take the same amount of time to post a raving rant. I'm not impressed. It takes less effort to help someone than it does to show your mean spirit. If you don't like what you see ignore it and let the Mods worry about content. There is life after iPhone.

You're welcome and I am so glad to hear it worked! (Thanks again for PM) I was thrilled when I discovered this procedure because iRinger did not work for me. (iRinger seems to only work on hacked iPhones; it will only let you have one custom ringer on the iPhone if it's not hacked.)

when you sync with itunes do you have the all ringtones checked by chance? When i had it set this way it would randomly sync one clip, but if you click all of them individually then they would all be there, i am jail broken and unlocked 1.1.4, so it might be different on normal ones.

No. When I got to the point I was going to sync., the new ring tones were not checked and I could not check them. I checked "Sync All Ringtones" and it warned me that it would erase existing RT's and install the ones showing. Which was fine it just reinstalled the existing and added the new.

No, I don't have each ringtone checked off. I have "sync ringtones" checked and then "all ringtones" selected.

This is probably because you don't manually manage your music. I do it this way so I don't accidentally erase music. It's easier for me to drag music and ringtones to my iPhone.
