question firmware upgrades

hey guys..if i get a new in box p800...what is this firmware upgrade i keep hearing about? so i get it new in the box, then i gottta upgrade firmware and send out? why do i have to upgrade? is it critical? what if i dont upgrade.....

what do the firmware updated do? compared to how the unit comes out of the box?

that i don't know, someone here with a little more knowledge of what the phone started with adn what it needs to be update too could help you a little more. I just got mine and am still learing a lot, i've been a long time samsung user and am trying to adjust to SE....
