(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So you're telling me we spent $400 for the phone. They come out with a 2.0 a year later with tons of new features and sell it for half the price. WTF!
There's nothing left but to say F you to the 1.0 users! I'm so pissed.

put your money where your mouth is. You can still get $400 for the original. Sell it now. I dare you

Posted by: ~~Tito~~

Where is the ton? All it is, is a new FW when it comes out, we get it too. All it basically is is 3G and GPS. Big whoop. . . . quit whinnying, we all saw the stevenote, if you didn't watch it.

Why the heck would anyone buy an older iPhone for a $400 price tag when they can get a brand new 2.0 model for $199 price tag

Because the way the new one is being sold and priced, and the fact that the last 3 or 4 revisions of the firmware have yet to be hacked... and the initial gen 1 can be unlocked, it still retains its value, atleast till an end run around ATT's policies and practices, and the 3g gets hacked

You're comparing apples and oranges. The two handsets are being sold under two completely different models. The original iPhone was sold outright, the iPhone 3G will be sold subsidized. The iPhone 3G will have cost you a lot more than $199 after you paid off the subsidy. You really can't compare the two scenarios 1:1. It's like comparing the down payment on a car you finance to the full purchase price of a car you own.

Of course, that's completely ignoring the fact that you have to pay for service either way! Or that the original phone was supposed to require a contract. Your analogy is pointless I'm afraid.

Having said that, the 1st gen phone will sell well simply because people do think that way. They think that an unlocked phone is more valuable to them and fail to realize that they still have to pay a service providor. The only difference is who they pay.

Not at all! Of course you have to pay for service either way, but your contractual cost of service includes a certain (non-specified) portion that goes to recover the initial subsidy the carrier laid out when you acquired the handset.

The original iPhone was not subsidized, which allowed customers to use their subsidy (which they paid for anyway as part of their monthly service fee) on another handset and either keep it as a backup (getting two phones for the price of one) or sell it for a profit (essentially transferring the subsidy to the iPhone and thereby reducing its price to something close of what the iPhone 3G will cost). The iPhone 3G will be subsidized, which means you won't be eligible to acquire another subsidized handset over the course of your contract.

It all evens out in the end. It's really just a matter of paying upfront in full vs. making a down payment upfront and monthly installments thereafter.

you know what dont worry every one , after few weeks , when att they gather enough contracts apple is gonna be selling iphones like doritos chips so dont worry and dont be afraid this is just like last year , no big deal , apple with defintly get tierd of the contract fill up and they would have extra 3g iphone like every where so they have no choice but to sell them with out contracts .

LOL... do you know how much of an idiot you sound like?

So you're pissed a company released a new product that's better and cheaper than the old version and that pisses you off? how would you rather have it? better and more expensive? Crappier but cheaper?

Sheesh... You should be happy that iPhone 2.0 software works on the original iPhone!

I love these threads, so thanks for ending my day with a smile. Is this the first piece of technology you've ever bought? If so, then I'll stop. If it's not, did you not pay attention? Technology changes, all the time and sometimes it comes in cheaper. Do you actually expect all technology items to remain the same price? If you do some reading you'll see why the iPhone 3G is cheaper.

Price of being an early adopter...I wonder how many times you argued with someone who said you paid too much?

Posted by: energy177

like the poster said above, if this is your first piece of technology, i apologize, but otherwise you have got to be kidding me.

in the long run, it is great for everyone that technology is improving and prices are decreases (b/c more people are using it). but regardless, this is being sold as a totally different business model, so work the math before you fret.

First off, i am NOT an Apple fanboy. I love my Windows XP machine and I think Vista is not bad at all ,as long as u got the drivers for it

But honestly...would u rather have them sell iPhone 3G at a higher price so it could make u happy!! I am a first gen user, and i love how i only have to pay 200 for the new iPhone!!! and what is even better, since i have the first gen, I can buy the new iphone at the 199 price tag even though im not eligible for a new phone because i have alot of time left on my contract.

Do you really need to know why? You were complaining that you wasted your money on the iphone1, I said you can get all your money back and more and put that money towards the precious 3g. Are you going to do it or not?

Wow you are such a techno n00b, did you get your panties in this much of a twist when you bought an SNES and the Nintendo 64 came out?

Check ebay...8 gb's going for over 400 bucks. Just saw one out there at $415. and the auction hadn't ended yet.

OP, what are you so mad about? You paid $400 for a phone you wanted and if you are on ATT (But hey your post says Verizon?! ) your data plan is 10 cheaper/month than the upcoming 3G phone. Plus your phone is unlockable and hackable.

And I paid $500 for my phone....maybe that should make you just as mad that I have twice the storage in my phone that yours does and I only paid 100 dollars more than you!!!

But the N64 wasn't cheaper!!

Anyways, who gives, I paid $575 CAD for my 4GB (before the price drop) and am excited about the fact that I can get the new one cheaper. People will complain about anything!! A big factor in getting the new one is piece of mind. It has been tested on Rogers network and has a plastic back, so it should be better reception wise.

You should be glad that the contract with ATT allowed Apple to screw their customers over with only the first phone model.

ATT set aside subsidy money for both phones, so it was no extra skin off their back.

But in the case of the first one, Apple took your share and called it "monthly revenue sharing". Apple got the profit from the sale AND your subsidy.

If Apple hadn't been so greedy, the first phone would've cost almost nothing as well. Now that their hands are out of your pockets as much, the carriers can give the customer a deal again.

We are selling iphone 1.0 for 20% more than a week ago. You are such and idiot evil. Iphone 1.0 users get a full metal jacket, higher quality optical screen, dock, and most importantly there phones are actually cheaper to user month over month, so shut the F up you retard... and don't cry.

Posted by: JonnyBruha

If you think that's bad, I can only imagine how the guys who waited in line to pay $5-600 must feel like!

The only unfortunate part about any of this is that the iPhone was never being sold unlocked through AT&T or Apple. It was a locked piece of hardware being sold at full retail with a contract. The community is to thank for changing all of that, not Apple or AT&T.

I think the new price is awesome for the masses willing to pay for it and their new and improved contract.

Posted by: sk2sep2304

I only paid $250.

Posted by: Softwaregenie07

I usually just like to read and only input when I feel it is necessary. To be honest, Us 1st gen iPhone owners will reap allot of profits off of the first Gen Iphones. Allot of people have seen news reports and also online reports of the situation of the new iphone being only purchased at ATT.
The profit margin is still very high on ebay for 1st gen iphones(New:$450.00 - $500.00 Used: $350.00 - $430.00).
Broken 1st Gen iPhones are still selling well over $200.00.One auction ended earlier today for a 16GB for $800.00 (It was a new iphone but still...).My point? Most of us smart first gen iphones will reap more than the current profit once the world finds out that they cannot purchase a new iphone without being tied into the contract(There are 1,000's of people who prefer pay as you go),thus sending them to ebay to purchase first gen iphones. This will be a big ticket for the over seas market as well.

Posted by: JonnyBruha

Fun fact: Older iPhones are heavier than newer ones, and I'm not talking about 1st gen versus the 3G model. A buddy of mine bought a used one this week and you can feel the difference when you have the two right next to each other.
