Waiting…
At the moment I’m waiting for 2.0 to be released and the 3G iPhone to be in my hands.
Stay tuned for further updates.

Things will probably change again but this shows that hackers are keeping up pretty well. The cat and mouse game continues!

Never met the guy, used Ziphone over 10 times, no problems. I don't really care who will unlock's 3G 1st, as long as it's unlocked soon.

Even if it's unlocked, you have to sign a contract in order to obtain the iPhone 3G, no?

Or you can try Ebay

Then you cancel it within the first month, pay the $175 early termination fee and have an iphone 2 for about the same price as an iphone 1.

Assuming that works, you'd be free from AT&T, which has the only 3G network in the US that the iPhone 3G can use.

And you can't even get data on the T-Mobile prepaid plan.

Also, you may be passing up some good applications in the App. store.

That said, I'm going to see if people can cancel and the 2.0 firmware is jailbroken.

I have a T-Mobile prepaid SIM and also an Italian prepaid SIM.

I have no idea if you'll be able to download apps from the app store on an unlocked phone using wifi. OTOH, I'm betting most of the good ones will be up there fairly soon after July 11, and so you can just get the ones you want before cancelling the contract.

That's assuming AT&T will let someone ETF out in the first month of the contract (it's not in the cancellation part of AT&T's T&Cs to do so, only after the 30-day window). Especially with this in mind, it's not certain. AT&T might force people to either return the device as per their cancelation policy, pay the real retail price of the phone (which could be more than the subsidized price+175 ETF), or refuse to do a cancellation until after 30 days.

I am with Haas on this one. You will not be able to cancel service and pay a measly $175 extra to keep your 3g iPhone. Do you people really think that Apple sold each iPhone to AT&T for $375? No way. I bet AT&T paid $500 for the 8Gb and $600 for the 16Gb. Try to cancel and I bet you get hit with $300 in charges just to keep your phone.

Even the first iPhone meant $399 plus 2 years worth of revenue sharing for Apple. That's over $600 for the 8Gb and $700 for the 16Gb 1st Gen iPhone.

Even if you can only cancel after 31 days, the absolute maximum you pay is $70 (first month's service, + $175 EFT, + $36 activation fee + $299 (for 16 GB) = $580. So at worst, its a 16 GB iphone + GPS, at only $80 more than a 16GB iphone. That sounds good to me, and if we're luckly you can cancel in the first 3 days, pay the EFT, and pay only $299 + $175 + (likely) $36 (which the leaked AT&T memo on Engadget suggested would be possible). Either way, I'm not particularly worried. In any case, we'll all know in a few weeks.

This is too much work, if you willing to spent $600, Ebay is probably a better way and no hassels.

it sucks for resellers, i wonder how its going to work in the apple stores. They will sign you up with ATT in the apple store or what?

Yup. That's how it sounds. No one will be allowed out of the store without signing a contract. I'll wager it will be like buying a Verizon phone in Radio Shack or Best Buy: The stores will have a link to the AT&T site.

If it works the way most other phones do you'll be required to return the handset if you terminate early, or pay full retail (non contract price) to keep the phone, plus the ETF.

Don't expect to see a lot of bargains on eBay for the 2.0's right off the bat. Or a lot of NIB 3Gs for that matter.

How will the iPhones end up on eBay then?

They are allready on Ebay, pre sale.

Posted by: chak_dey

so what if you cancel the service within like 2 days, and tell them you lost the iphone, or your refuse to return it. How much will charge? They can charge the activation fee, plus the ETF. If you do decide to cancel your service within the 3 days, they can't charge you for full month of service. Right?

Correct.

But they can charge you for what they "say" is the FULL retail price of the iPhone. Because $199/$299 is the subsidized price.

There are quite a few people saying no cancellations within 30 days, much less 3.

Posted by: chinese_fury

I would imagine that AT&T learned a hard lesson from the 1st gen iphone that they will not allow to happen again his time around on the 2nd gen model concerning loop holes and people finding ways to get around the sop from AT&T.

This just makes the 1st gen iphone all the more valuable to those who are not interested in being contracted to a carrier.

the AT&T memo said you can absolutely cancel before 30 days, just like any other phone and plan you would get. However, just like those other phones, you MUST return the device, or they will not cancel you service until you give up your iPhone.

After 30 days, they will let you keep the phone, but you must pay additional costs.
