iPhone on T-Mo, what does/doesn't work?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok, I apologize if this has been posted, and I'm sure the info is somewhere but I've read through the entire iPhone hacking section and couldn't find it.

So, if I buy a regular old iPhone and unlock it, put it on T-Mobile, what works and what doesn't? Specifically does the iTunes Music Store still work? Youtube (apparently yes...will it work over EDGE though)? How about anything location based? I'd be using the full internet plan and not trying to sneak by on T-zones, for the sake of convenience. Bottom line, what am I going to be missing out on on 1.1.4 firmware?

I know visual voicemail won't work, I don't care about that. Any speculation on how an unlocked iPhone (assume non jailbroken) will work with the App Store on 2.0 firmware? I'd also be curious if a phone with 2.0 firmware could take advantage of the newly announced Apple-provided notification service. I know nobody knows these answers for now, but I just thought I'd throw them out there. Thanks.

everything works on t-mo if you have total internet (including youtube over EDGE and locate me in google maps) except for visual voicemail. i have no idea what you're referring to when you talk about the itunes music store? yes, you can purchase songs over wifi and sync with your itunes library if the phone is unlocked.

to your second set of questions...first of all i've never seen a way to unlock an iphone that is not jailbroken unless you are using a stealthsim or similar hardware unlock which i assume you aren't if you're just picking up an iphone now. and afaik the beta 3 of 2.0 was jailbroken successfully and i assume it won't take too long for there to be an unlock/jailbreak of the new firmware based on that info. but as far as how well it will play nicely with the app store i have no idea and i don't think anybody really does until it's released

I have had my unlocked/jailbroken IPhone working on Tmo since March, when I bought it off EBay. I upgraded to 1.1.4 and ZiPhoned (apparently I got lucky using Ziphone) and everything still works. Using the $19.99 Data Plan.

Also I recently found a free service called YouMail that can redirect your voicemail to their service. You can set up the service to notify you with an text or email. Plus other fun features. So in effect I have all the functionality an AT&T Gen 1 IPhone has on Tmo.

Good Luck and Enjoy

so to get the full package, i need the internet plan, i thought t-zone takes care of everything?

youtube doesn't work with t-zones, well it works but you have to be on wifi. i used my iphone with tzones since november and i finally switched to total internet and found total internet to be wayyyy faster. internet was pretty much unusable with tzones for me but now with total internet it's much better, although you still can't expect that much from EDGE. but everyone has different experiences with tzones so who knows...

I'm hopefully picking up a V1 iPhone soon for use on T-Mo so I'm also pretty interested in this thread. Already knew vis voicemail wouldn't work (and also don't care), but I had heard Youtube works on TZones with some kind of hack or setting change. Are all Youtube video's finally showing up on the iPhone or is still a select bunch?

Also, I wonder if when the new apps start to come out that more Tzones problems start to surface if they try to use port 80 like some progs on WinMo phones (ShoZu, TinyTwitter, SkyFire, etc...).

well i must be lucky, youtube works perfect for me, downloaded the tzones 1.1.4 hack, there was 2, a regular tzone hack and the 1.1.4.

downloaded the 1.1.4 and internet is pretty fast, and youtube is great. most of the time it works, and it rarely does not.

So I'm (like anyone else with an "adjusted" iPhone) are paying extra to AT&T when TMo does the same (if not better) for less?

If you're saying AT&T charges more then $19.99 for an iPhone data plan then it sounds like you may be paying too much.

Just a quick update on that YouMail app I mentioned above. I turned on the VM transcriber and now I really can see and read my voice messages. Some words are a little hard to transcribe, but I'm getting the jest of the message.

Sounds like I have an ETF in my future.

Thanks!

BTW, I just tried my Blackberry sim in my 8Gb and it worked. My scary thought is that with the new OS due to come out soon, if I jump ship, then upgrade and there is no "patch" readily available, I may be iScrewed. Also, after switching the original SIM, iTunes wouldnt connect to the phone unless I put the original back. Not a big deal, but worth mentioning.

I think Imma wait til it feels right (thats what she said).

I am using mine on T-Mobile with no issues. I have the total internet plan.

And to the iTunes problem stated above. iTunes knows the phone with the AT&T sim what I did was to backup my iTunes then I deleted it and re-installed it and replaced my music then it saw my iPhone as a new one with the T-Mobile sim and sinc's fine now.

One more thing that doesn't quite work correctly is that if you receive a missed call, it shows up as a "Call Failure" dialog. However this is inherent in unlocked/jailbroken phones and not specific to T-Mobile.

Occasionally Caller ID doesn't work for me. It manifests itself when someone who has a custom ringtone calls me and the default ringtone rings. Or sometimes the caller (who is on my favorites) even shows up as Unknown (even though its a T-Mobile number calling me). It happens about 1 in 10 times.

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, but I'm not finding any $19.99 total Internet plan on TM's Web site. Total Internet is listed at $39.99 and the Sidekick plan is $29.99. If I'm just looking in the wrong place, any help would be appreciated.

we know that 3g wont work...
lol..

I believe if you call Tmo customer service they can hook you up with the $19.99 Total Internet Plan. If I recall that's how I did it. Or it may have been through the retail store.

Here's a link for you, T-Mobile Total Internet Add-On for $19.99...
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/addons...Tab_Smartphones

And just FYI, you can also use the $19.99 Blackberry Unlimited Add-On. They'll do the same thing. Here's the link for that...

Good luck getting what you need!

For WinMo machines there are tons of programs that don't work because port 80 is blocked (Shozu, Tiny Tweet, SkyFire, etc.) I would expect similar to happen with the iPhone. Can anybody confirm any issue's with some of the new apps?

does the 19.99 plan include the use of t-mobile hot spots? or is that seperate

I'm pretty sure for the hotspots you need the $30 plan, thats pretty much the only difference.
