Tethering Frequency...Is it Phone Specific?

As the title states, is tethering specific to a certain phones frequency? I ask because I have an unlocked phone that I use with my Cingular service, which uses the 1900 band, and I can't seem to get tethering to work. If I use my Cingular branded phone (a V3 Razr), it connects without a problem. Once I switch back over to the unlocked phone, it doesn't connect, even though the phone shows up as modem and I'm using the same connection as the other phone (I do go into the property settings and change the modem from the Razr V3 to the other phone). Any ideas out there on this?

Perhaps AT&T is using 850 MHz in your area. Tethering would use the same frequencies the phone would use for a data connection.

When I use the unlocked phone, it gets good data speed (average 40+K on GPRS) when using the internet. It just won't connect for tethering. I guess I'll switch back to the branded phone for now, so I don't have to keep switching the SIM around, but the internet is so much slower on the branded phone (Razr V3). Thanks for the reply.

Do data sessions and web browsing work on that phone itself?

Yeah, web browsing and even text messaging work fine on the unlocked phone, though text messaging is intermittent sometimes. It just won't let me tether to my pc.
