There are free apps - Google Maps and Live Search being amongst the best. They all use data though, so you will want an unlimited data plan. Nav4all is free until 2010, but I just really did not like it's interface at all - you should try it yourself though and make up your own mind.

If you want a standalone app (ie. no data use) like TomTom or Garmin, it's going to cost you some money - none of them are free.

tomtom, garmin, iGo, etc are all a one time fee. you pay the one time fee and then you use it as much as you wish without paying anymore; even if you switch devices later on. i have tomtom on my tilt, and when i eventually switch to the tytn III or X1, i'll just move my memory card and have tomtom on my next device

licensing fee ad map download fees unvolved. licensing fee is one time, map fee is for new maps or upgrading of older versions.

There are some illegal hacked versions of Tom-Tom floating around the web, but I would stay away from these (no tech support or updates for bogus copies of software plus legal, ethical and potential security issues). Better just to buy or try a trial version before you buy.
If you are on a budget or anticipate light use of GPS software, Google maps is a quality piece of free software that is easy to download and install (I put it on my Tilt and am happy with it). Because it wirelessly downloads maps on the fly, it's also thrifty on memory useage and has Google's latest map updates. It has some advanced features like satellite photos, and live traffic flows. As another person mentioned, you do need a big dataplan for Google maps, but AT&T does have some reasonably priced data deals (postpaid data only plans, decent business discounts, and a prepaid unlimited data plan for $19.99/month).
There is also a GPS satellite location download program on the Tilt that speeds up location fixes for Google maps or other GPS software packages.

Just use Google Maps like Huey mentioned. I have the Wing with Google Maps installed and it works great. Especially for free software. I have the data plan and it tells me where I'm at and how to get to where I want to go.
