So instead of $1 we'll pay $200 for the 8 gig (example)
Their rates are like $37 more per month then our lowest plan. Just the first year that is $444 more?? So $888 more for the whole two years assuming they do two year plans over there.

Would you rather buy the iphone for $1 here and pay a $107 monthly plan?

How do you know what "plans" they offer for the price?

Uh, it said so right there in the story?

The €1 price must be combined with either a €69 or €89 monthly plan ($107 and $138, respectively, in U.S. dollars).

samc is right ... this isn't really a "deal". What is surprising to see, though, is that the US business model of "free! with contract!" is now infecting the otherwise admirable EU cellular market - where you buy your phone, then you buy your plan.

Sorry, I meant how many minutes do they provide for these amounts. As in Europe I believe incoming calls have always been free. So maybe the plans mentioned in the article offer more minutes than AT&T.

So maybe these plans are indeed a better value, or maybe not.

Does that clear up my question?

Ah, much clearer...

It's plans (minutes) for the price (monthly $)...

Not plans (monthly price) for the price (the $1.55 for the phone).

I know incoming calls being free is the norm in the UK - not sure about all countries in EU though. Wonder if that will be the next feature to go away.

Incoming calls have always been free in the EU.

The prices are outrageous. I pay €20 every month and I get 175 minutes or 350 text messages (1 minute = 2 text messages). The lowest T-Mobile plan is €29 per month, and for that you get a whopping FIFTY minutes and ZERO text messages. Whoopidoo.

This is not true. In the Netherlands, you usually buy your phone with a contract. The big advantage in comparison with the US business model is that the carriers provide subsidies on phones when you sign a contract. Not only in their store, but in EVERY store. So you can buy every phone that is available on the market with a contract, and not just the phones that the carrier has selected.

And the monthly fees are generally lower.

Why is price always such a big deal? This is nothing new or revolutionary. The iPhone is being subsidized by the carriers now. No different than when I got my Nokia 101 for $25 back in 1995 when I signed a year contract.

Free phones with a contract has been the norm in the Uk for years. Almost all handsets are free with contract. Most, if not all, European countries have the caller pays system.

The iPhone is free with a £45/month contract in the UK. You get 1200 mins, 500 texts, unlimited data, and unlimited Wi-Fi usage. The biggest advantage of O2's iPhone tariffs over AT7T's is that they are 18 month contracts, not 2 years. The iPhone will also be sold PAYG.

Well there you have it. AT&T is more expensive as $90 +/- (whatever the exchange rate is today) in UK will get you more min (300) more text (500 or 300), less contract by 6 months, and all incoming calls are free.

For 79 here currently my bill on gen 1 is 90 w/tax. 900 min, unltd data, 200 text. My wifes is 69 inc. tax, (TMO) 1k min, mbl to mbl, 300 txt, unlimited data.

With the 3g, it may be that the UK has the better plan; thoughts?

If you're already using the expensive plan for whatever reason, it's a great deal
