3G iPhone Release Time

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I know the last iPhone was released at 6 p.m., which gave time for the stores to close, set up, and then re-open, so are they going to do the same thing with this iPhone. I figured they would release them in the morning this time, being as they have a whole month to prepare for the onslaught of customers.

I've heard they are doing it the same as last year.

Yes, they are doing the same thing. July 11th at 6PM, lines of people will be waiting outside, news coverage will be in major cities. The only difference is that activation will have to happen at the store rather than you going home for activation.

I wonder how are the world this is going to turn out, with activation being in the store & all. I don't think they are going to be able to take care of everyone...we shall see. Lol.

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing. Given the activation debacle last year, having people activate in the store and take 15-20 minutes is not the fix.

if true, that's lame. I was hoping to get it in the morning and beat the "crowd" . Now you got everyone getting off work standing in line. Plus the added time for activation makes it a really bad idea.

I'm certainly glad I read this, because I was going to try and get mine in the morning as well.

I imagine them requesting the billing name and address and a signature. Then our info will be proccessed for a couple hours by ATT after the customer has already left the store.

I only see new accounts slowing the lines.

i read on iphone news at mac rumors, that there will be a separate line for existing iphone customers. all they need is the imei of the 3G and you can leave...pop the sim in from your existing iphone, connect to itunes and you are good to go...not sure if this is true, but i hope so.

I completely hope this is true. This will def ease the pain of waiting since people who don't have an iPhone or AT&T it will take that much longer to sign them up and then activate the phone.

It would be funny to gave video of some lady walking in expecting to buy tons of iPhones in hopes of selling them on ebay and being turned away like last time.

Well according to current rumor, you will have the option of doing the full activation in-store, but there seems to be the option of just buying the phone and putting your name etc into the system and doing an activation on-line. Then if you do not activate within 30 days, you will be charged fairly heavily(To combat people buying phones at subsidized price to sell on ebay for full value or more).

If this is the case, this SHOULD speed the lines up somewhat.

yea i am wondering where you heard this too because i called a customer service rep for att and she claimed you could buy them as soon as the store opened on the 11th, but what do CSR's know....lol

The problem is that Apple/AT&T have been mum on the launch day details. Hopefully soon, but I think on the week before the launch, we get all the details. Still lots of missing holes.

Do you really think people will be lining up to get a 3g iphone? i cant imagine any body bothering here in the UK. In fact iv'e had my iphone since December & iv'e yet to see any one-else with one(& i live in a very wealthy area). Im sure they will sell, but i just dont think there will be people getting in line for them. Not here anyway.

I heard it from a reputable source. They said this is standard procedure for launching all recent Apple products, not just the iPhone. It's not an AT&T thing.
