cradles, patches, and such, for antennas

I've seen some things on offer for phones that slip over the antenna, or attach to the back, or whatever, basically to act as a transferal point to an external antenna when there's no place to make a wired connection.
I'm thinking about buying a blackberry. I'm aware that BB's don't have external antenna ports, but I'm going to need some boosting if I'm going to get what I pay for out here at my house. I know there's no way that these things are going to work as well, if indeed at all, as an actually patched-in connection, at least not with a passive antenna, but I thought I would check and see if anyone had any experience with them. Do they offer any gain?

You best bet is a repeater and they are expensive.
Is there another carrier who offers coverage at your house?

no, not really.
I'm tethering through an e815 right now, w/o external antenna, so it will be possible, but I'll be setting one up soon. Trying to get the most speed for my dollar.

no, not really. Alltel's the best game (soon to be Verizon).

Coverage is everything. I had bad coverage at the house once and it was rough with just a bar or so, it did not take much to have no coverage.
I do have a friend who home and business is out in the country. They are on Nextel and he had NO service what so ever. He had installed a repeater system that gave you full bars. You would leave the expressway with maybe 3 bars and watch your signal go to zero for miles and then as you approached his compound, you would watch Nextel service go to full bars. Phone and chirp works without flaw.
He did have about 70 employees who visitied the compound on a daily basis to pick-up and bring back equipment. Not sure of Nextel did this for him or not but it did work great.
