Switch to Skype from Vonage

I am thinking about switching from Vonage to Skype. The wife is not too keen on the idea because we lose 911 (well e911 anyway). She also wants to keep her number and I explained to her that would not be possible either. What I am curious about is this:

My router has a phone port on the back which I connect to my house phone and my voip works automagically. Will this be the case if I switch to skype? can i get my equipment to work or will i need a different router?

I have been on Skype only for a while now, using it for my business and international calls.

Unfortunately for you and me no such router exists to connect Skype to regular phones without a computer present AFAIK.

I am using a USB desktop phone that works really well, but it is no substitution for Vonage wired into your home.

If you have an old computer you could configure it to run Skype and attach a USB Skype-to-PSTN adapter, but that will generate noise and cost you electricity to run it 24/7

The whole industry is immature and also hindered by Skype closed and guarded protocol. Despite their competitive prices (or because of them) Skype does not seem to want to be a complete drop-in replacement for your current service.
