Activating used iPhone after May 27th

What if i borrowed my friend's iPhone for 10 minutes just to activate it and leave the data plan and iPhone stuff on my account? Later next month, when I walk into an Apple or AT&T store, can they see I have a iPhone (which I really don't) and give me the 199/299 price?

You can do so - but why bother?

You will need a new clean SIM ($25) to activate it and your friend will have to go get a new SIM (Another $25) to put it back on his account.

$50 to be able to spend exactly what you'll spend without all the maneuvering.

If you're curious about whether you'll be able to buy the 3G at 199/299 CALL AT&T. It's that simple.

I did - repeatedly - and was told each time that the ONLY price is 199/299. There is no other price point because there is no sale from authorized retailers (AT&T Corp Stores and Apple stores) without a 2 year commitment.

Even replacing a lost or destroyed (uninsured) 3G will result in a renewed contract on the affected line

It's a bit early to take what the CSRs are saying as fact. I have doubts that the final policies are in place, much less everyone being trained on it.

Very good point. Anyone who followed the release of iPhone V1 can tell you that AT&T CSRs distributed a lot of false info before the official AT&T press release. Instead of saying something like "the policy has not been finalized yet," they give you their best guess presented as fact. I would definitely take anything the CSRs say at this point with a large grain of salt until AT&T's official announcement is released.

Man, you mean a large canister of salt that you buy from supermarkets. Anyway, I got a 4GB iphone and I'm trying it. If it doesn't work then I'll sell it since current iphones are still at least above 200.

After activating the iphone 4GB, it says I am eligible to upgrade now.

It will be interesting to see if AT&T requires that you actually own an iPhone, but I doubt it considering the hassle it would cause in the store. Redsetter what are you talking about? He put his SIM in the iPHone activated it and took it back out and put it back in his old phone.

I hope they don't make me prove it. I mean you have to have an iphone for the data plan to appear right? Well, I guess i can say that I didn't want to bring in my iphone in because I wanted to use the 3G one right away. What is the point of bringing the old one when the new one is there to use right after purchase?

They won't make you prove it unless their system indicates that you are not eligible, you have another type of phone's IMEM on the line and you don't have the iPhone data plan active. The system is somewhat dynamic and will report the last phone that was connected to the network using your SIM. That's why several people have been saying they kept their iPhone data plan after they sold their iPhone on Ebay.

It is easy to tell them that you have multiple phones but the lack of the iPhone data plan may cause them to inquire further.
