8310 and GMAIL - certificate/Key Store issues

Working on a friend's 8310 (AT&T). She'd been using the GMAIL mobile app for a while until recently, when she started getting asked to trust a certificate, as follows:

"You are attempting to open a secure connection, but the server's certificate is not trusted. [Continue][Close connection][View Certificate][Trust certificate]"

If I click continue, I get the popup once or twice more, then the app connects (usually.)

If I click Trust, I get a popup asking me to enter the password for the device's Key Store. She doesn't know the password, or remember setting one.

I've tried upgrading the device OS (now 4.2.2.170) and deleting/reinstalling Gmail, but the behavior persists.

What's up with this? Can I manually install the cert, or get the device to quit throwing the popup?
