I don't think many people would go for it. I know I wouldn't.

the whole point of the iphone is touch screen.

Posted by: blacksrt4guy

Myself, I prefer keys and no I dont want a BB with that nasty OS. Love the iPhone UI but dont care for the lack of keys and touch only interface. Id go for it.

Posted by: mandrsn1

I would like a keypad. The touch screen is cool, but I think typing is easier with real keys. I would like to try the iPhone with haptic feedback.

No kiddin. The whole point of this poll is to discuss the what if. Apple makes very nice products and I for one would like to see what they could do with a full QWERTY non touch device.

Posted by: Saoirse1916

Nah, I've had two smartphones with qwerty keyboards and I'm looking forward to the new iPhone to get away from that. It's certainly handy, but the extra bulk is getting annoying.

Posted by: jdlngsm

The reason you are getting such negative responses is that the whole point of the iPhone OS is the "keyboard" can customize itself to anything that the running application needs. You can't do that effectively with a QWERTY as their positions are fixed. I do agree the "get a blackberry" comment was a bit smart but they are the best of breed for a QWERTY device.

Posted by: davistld01

Yeah, I definately would...without a doubt. The virtual keypad was one of the two major reasons I didn't really bond with my iPhone. And, although I would probably get better at the non-tactile iPhone keypad with practice, I am much more comfortable with a real qwerty.

You just stated you wanted to see what they could do with a full qwerty non touch device.

Never said anything about a phone.

And you make phone calls on it by using skype.

You know what I mean. Dont be ignorant. Why are you iPhone users so defensive?

I'm not defensive, i'm just poking a little fun man, calm down.

I love my iPhone the way it is. I'm an extremely heavy texter (send about 2500-3000 a month) and my old q9m actually caused callouses on my fingers and it hurt (worse than playing guitar) but not having physical buttons to press on the iPhone have made it so much better.

But to each his own.

EDIT: I see you had touch dual... how did you like it?

Its all good man! We all like to poke and prod a bit lol. I thought more people would be into a iPhone with keys but like you said, to each his own.

The Touch dual wasn't bad. It had good sound quality, good build, worked pretty good all around but ultimately it was the battery life that killed it for me. Thing died before my 12 hour day was up. And it was WM, no matter how much they dress it up, I still dont like it.

Half-witted answer to a half-witted thread.

The entire point of the iphone is to be a slim, touchscreen device. They make an iphone with a QWERTY. It's called a Tilt. As much as you don't like WM, it is a Pocket PC. You can potentially put another OS on there.

To add a full QWERTY to the iPhone would be idiotic. You'll have to either double the size, or add a slider - two things that would ruin the aesthetic. We've already seen how switching from portrait to landscape causes some issues on other phones, it would do the same with an Apple product.

Furthermore, look at the iPod's evolution: going from many buttons to none. Why would Apple reverse that trend with it's phone line? You want people to give you intelligent answers, but we can't expect that in return by making threads that just maybe be rooted in some sort of reality?

Very good, Im impressed. But I dont agree. Why does it have to be a Tilt? Why cant it be as slim as the iPhone? The only reason the iPhone is what it is is because thats all Apple has ever made. Why cant they go after another part of the market? They couldnt make a phone that would sell 10 million units either. Oh wait they did. Sure they could make it and make it slim and small and make it work.

Because from what I've seen, the on-screen keyboard is good enough. Sliders eventually break. It's inevitable. The software lags when it switches. I don't see why a Mac OS would be any different. Do you go with a flip like the 9300? Recent models from other manufacturers look like toys.

I'd rather type on a fake keyboard on a glass screen than have a thin, fragile piece of plastic that would break easily.

Besides - if Apple will stop screwing with the BT, you could pair a real keyboard if you really needed to.

Posted by: JerryNY

I don't know what to vote here. I can see Apple possible adding some physical keyboard to a larger device in addition to a touchscreen but I can't see them not having a touchscreen completely. The whole iPhone's OS and GUI is based on the touch framework and multi-touch, heck Snow Leopard is supposed to incorporate multi-touch as well.

Look back at the keynote with the iphone's original release. A massive portion of their design concept was based around the fact that keyboards waste physical space and can't be customized to each apps needs. Like others have mentioned if you need a physical keyboard more than a large screen, excellent UI and great form factor maybe the iphone isn't for you.

Posted by: kamal183

What's wrong with this joker? OP are you sick in the head? Do you realize how MANY phones have a QWERTY? Buy one of THEM. The whole POINT to iPhone is NO KEYBOARD. Gosh, why do jokers make these threads? I don't want a QWERTY keyboard anymore.

Quoted For TRUTH. There are other phones that have what he wants.

3.5 inch touch screen without the touch i dont think i will got for it because if it is not a touch screen to me it is waste of time

Does anyone else not realize that he's talking about have the iPhone UI on a body that has a physical qwerty. Why do you say "that's the whole point of having an iPhone"? The HTC Touch doesn't have a keyboard also. To me the point of having the iPhone is to have the responsiveness and stability of the iPhone OS on a phone that is designed well..in this case there are no physical keys, but Apple could still make an iphone with qwerty and call it iPhone 2. It's still an iPhone either way you look at it because that's the interface and system design..

Thank you! My point exactly. Im not here trying to rip the iPhone or say it would be better if had a physical keypad. This is just a what if, hypothetical question. You walk into the Apple store to buy your long awaited 3G iPhone and Steve pops out real quick to show you a prototype iQwerty and says what do you think? Would you buy it? What if its touch screen and has a QWERTY keypad!?? That could happen too. I dont know why everyone thinks the iPhone cant have a physical keypad. The iPhone is based on Leopard is it now? My Macbook isnt touch only? I cant even touch the screen at all. What is Apple after? What do they want? Our money. The want market share. Another phone will only help them get more of it!

And as I pointed out, it would have the exact same drawbacks as any other QWERTY phone out there.

I want an iPhone because it isn't any of those things.

Understood. BUT...would it have the "exact same drawbacks"? Id like to think Apple could do alot better and therefor not have those drawbacks. Youre assuming that it would and I dont think so. I want the iPhone UI, Apple build quality and itunes sync on something with a keypad!

That was my point when I tried explaining your point....lmao.

These people aren't realizing that Apple could do better than HTC or Palm, etc. because of the software implementation. Anyone can build a phone that has amazing hardware specs, but what good are they if you don't have compitent software that they are powering?

I still wouldn't buy a non-touchscreen iPhone, but I understand exactly where you're coming from.

I think they would. I don't see the iPhone OS being any less of a resource hog that a Palm or WM OS would. You're assuming that it wouldn't, and I don't agree.

Have you used an iPhone extensively? I'm don't know if you have or not, but i'm going going to make any assumptions. The iPhone is by far more stable and less of a resource hog than either palm or OS X. I have used devices that have all 3 and by far my iphone crashes/freezes much less, even though it's jailbroken and not using apps that have any sort of official SDK, so aren't necessarily coded to their potential.

Why would having a QWERTY change that?

UI means User Interface, or how the user and computer interact, especially for input.

The iPhone's UI is entirely based on the infinite possibilities of the multi-touch screen.

Your comment makes no sense whatsoever.

You want a completely different Apple phone with OS X stability and a fixed QWERTY.

Looking at your poll numbers, I wouldn't hold my breath.
4 out of 5 iPhone fans wouldn't buy your device.

Get a Nokia.

PS. I use the multi-touch capabilities of my Mac laptop all the time, perhaps you should explore the System Preferences a bit.

My comment makes perfect sense. Take the iPhone and give it QWERTY and make whatever adjustments are necessary. The iPhone is running a mobile version of Leopard, the stability is already there. Once again, Im not holding my breath, Im not attacking you iphone users, so relax. Just having conversation and looking for your thoughts. Stop making it so personal and "my device"....LOL

I already have one. Maybe you should try one.

It is interesting to think "what if" but the problem with certain products is they have some features which are so identifiable with the product itself at what point does it stop being true to what it is when you remove said features? The flip side of this whole thought process is what if a series of products almost defined by a keyboard goes with a touch screen interface like BB and the Thunder? BB die-hards are not going to love the keyboard-less approach at all IMHO. It should be interesting to see how the appeal of something like the Thunder's touch interface goes over with a device known for its kb.

No it really doesn't. At all.

If you want to serve and volley semantics, learn the definitions of the words first.

You stated you wanted the iPhone's UI with a fixed qwerty keyboard.

The iPhone's USER INTERFACE relies on the multi-touch interface.

The UI would be completely different with a fixed keyboard. Your theoretical device is a completely different phone.

As long as the device is not Any thicker than current iPhones....maybe.

Ugh. Awful to even imagine. So tired of phones with 41 little plastic nubs crowded together under the screen, dorking up my life.

iPhone = Slick black surface when off, amazingly crisp graphical interface when on = Star Trek The Next Generation, 300 years early. Awesome.

I'd hate if they gave the iPhone a physical QWERTY.
