MMS on 2.0 Firmware - Looks Very Possible

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I saw this on Intomibile's website:

http://www.intomobile.com/2008/06/2...-iphone-3g.html

Apple and AT&T's omission of MMS (picture messaging) messaging on the original iPhone was a point of contention for many. While the rest of us were more than happy to email our photos through the iPhone's highly-integrated and intuitive email application, there were those out there that felt burned by Apple's decision to keep MMS off the iPhone.

Now, it seems, Apple and AT&T are getting ready to make sure that the iPhone 3G will have the ability to send those seldom-used MMS messages to other MMS-capable handsets on AT&T's network. An internal AT&T memo list MMS support as a feature of the iPhone 3G.

If true, we could see picture, text, and possibly even video messaging supported on the next-generation iPhone platform. And, considering that AT&T isn't including any free SMS text messages with the iPhone rate plans, we could see AT&T launching a bundled iPhone MMS and SMS text messaging package.

The AT&T memo was confirmed by an AT&T customer service representative. So, consider this a rumor until we know otherwise - what with AT&T customer service reps being known for their accurate knowledge and all.

Note: The image above is not the AT&T iPhone MMS feature. This is a screenshot of a native iPhone application that enables MMS.

MMS is not built in to any phone. It is not hardware. So yes, 2.0 would bring MMS if true.

This news coming from your VERY first post too. WOW

In the keynote, they were talking about a generic push protocol for the iPhone that could be used by any SDK-based application. AT&T could use that to write their own SwirlyMMS and stick it in the App Store for free download.

Well, I think if At&T wanted it on there it would have been already. If they sold the software it would be extremely CHEAP of them to profit even further considering most of us are already paying $20 a month for SMS only.

What gets my goat the most is how NO ONE says NOTHING about MMS knowing full well a lot of us are wanting it.

Other people pay $20 a month for unlimited sms AND MMS messaging, and us iphone users get the crap end of the deal.

If it had MMS Steve would have touted it during the keynote...sorry folks, there's not going to be any MMSing from an iPhone yet.

It is also possible that Steve Jobs didn't mention it because doing so would have given more attention to a feature that while should be included is not used by many in the US. I wouldn't mention MMS at the keynote since the technology has been around for awhile, and Apple doesn't really think MMS is going to be around for that much longer.

I also think that they may need to include MMS because it is used a lot in other countries. I myself would like them to include it just so I don't have to hear about it as one of the iPhones "missing features".

He he, I was thinking the same thing. I hope they finally add MMS support, if only so I don't need to read any more threads of people complaining about it.

no because in that case he shouldn't have mentioned that it had 3G, because everyone and their mother yelled and screamed that the first iphone should have 3G. ditto for GPS.

Obviously alot of people do n fact use it. Enough to strike a nerve of those that think it's useless.

No MMS is the one feature making me waiver about getting the new iPhone, so it's important enough for me. I use MMS ALL THE TIME.

This is just my opinion, but when looking at the screen of a 3g iphone it only says SMS on the icon, not messaging or MMS etc.

Unless there is a hidden icon, where else would MMS be used?

I guess it could be hidden within the SMS App. But honestly, if the Iphone 3G was to have MMS, it would show up on Apple's "updated" 3G Iphone videos, in which it does not. Leaving me with the hope that it will be an AppStore download. Apple has not left any clues leading to MMS. And it wouldn't be their role to do so. They are just supplying the hardware. It all boils down to if this ATT "memo" is fact or fiction.

OT, but the new features look pretty kewl.
Save images, PDF, multiple delete, move to folder..etc...

Yeah, unfortunately same here. With the price that the iPhone is going to be offered for, I can live without all the other upgrades we hoped for (better camera, bigger HD, A2DP, etc.). Not having MMS is going to sway my choice though. Many of my friends and family still rely on it. I can live with email but they can't.
