Telefonica SA (TEF) has received 300,000 pre registrations in the U.K. and Spain to buy Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) new third- generation iPhone, a company spokesman said Wednesday.

The spokesman said customers have been reserving units of the popular handset on the company's Web site since Telefonica announced it would sell the device earlier this month.

That is a pretty good start weeks in advance in only 2 countries. I think Apple is gonna sell a boatload of 3g's no doubt.

Yes, in those countries, because they are completely covered in 3G. I don't believe they even sell 2G phones in some countries like China etc.

In the US, however, I don't see a big hyped crowd flocking to this one like the first gen, because a WHOLE LOT of the US doesn't even have 3G yet. So I cannot justify paying $10 more a month for the same slow EDGE I have now. Maybe that's just me =/

When a larger chunk of the US gets 3G, I can definitely see it being 3x more successful. Just my .02 cents

I agree, Apple already sold 6 million of the first gen. So, probably most of the first gen iphone owners will not immediately jump to the new iphone just because the expense was so great, and only a year later is not very long for the non techie person. Even last year I walked right into an At&t store the second day of release and there were only a couple of people in line. I think we will have more people just going to LOOK than anything. but, with the reduced pricing they will sell more over another year than they did this past year.

$199 is why they are going to buy. most consumers wont care about $10 a month.....hey, its the american way. buy now, pay later. i think the iphone is going to become very common in the US, to the point where it is no big deal to have one, like a razr. the good news here is that more phones = more apps/updates = more things you want out of your phone.

Welcome to the next RAZR.

But that point is too late, they have bought the phone. $200 price point makes this phone just as affordable as anything else out there.

Well, as affordable as other smartphones.

But most people aren't like us. Most people get the free or at most $30 cell phone.

I think the number of people in the US who want a smartphone, has pretty much max'd out, unless smartphones become "free".
