My number one complaint is sound quality when in a phone call. The volume is low, but also just very poor. It reminds me of the TDMA days. I have a really cheap motofone F3 that sounds magnitudes better.

This is my only real complaint about the phone.

I have to agree with mandrsn1. Call audio quality (not music or video, just during phone calls) is by far the worst aspect of the current iPhone. The volume of the earpiece is so low that it's practically unusable. The "speaker phone" is barely loud enough to use as an earpiece. Also, the sound is muffled and distorts easily, even more so on the outgoing side. Supposedly, the iPhone 3G will feature "dramatically improved audio quality" (direct quote from Steve Jobs).

Also, for a phone of that caliber, I don't understand why they can't filter by incoming and outgoing calls in the call history. Or that the call history is limited to 100 entries. Or that we're not able to search through our contacts, but supposedly firmware version 2.0 will correct that last aspect.

Anyway, there you have it. Those are four basic shortcomings of the iPhone as a phone. As an iPod and internet device I have no complaints, does exactly what it's supposed to do and does it very well.

Others will complain about the lack of Flash, video recording, and MMS, but I've never needed any of those. I'd just like for it to be a better phone, if it's supposed to replace my phone it needs to do whatever my previous phone did.

MMS may be coming to the iPhone with the 2.0 firmware. See this link:

Then you must not have very good of hearing. I turn my ear volume all the way down and can still hear the caller on the other end loud enough. I couldn't imagine turning up the volume more than half way.

It says it's a screenshot of a 3rd party app.

An at&t customer service rep. said this? Must be just speculation. Since when does at&t reps know anything about the 3G iphone.

Volume is only a small part of the issue. The speaker being garbage is more of the issue. It just sounds very muffled. Like I said, it sounds like pre-gsm TDMA phones. When I make a phone call with earphones (etymotic hf2) it sounds great so its not a chipset issue. It is just a poor design of the phone's earpiece.

hopefully the iphone 3G will have fixed the speaker problem as Steve Jobs said it was 'improved'

Here are my complaints in no particular order:

-No tactile feedback when dialing while driving
-No true tethering (DUN over Bluetooth)
-Handsfree is completely useless unless I'm in a silent room

Will any of these put me off from buying the 3G version next month? Not a chance!

the same complaints from the same people who wants a Homer phone like the Homer car...
no mms, "poor" quality camera, no videocam capability, poor voice quality, no replacable battery, not locked, no SD slot, expensive, expensive plan, terrible at&t service, doesn't give oral sex, doesn't make coffee...lather,rinse,repeat.
