Price Drop for Original iPhone?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm currently looking to switch from Verizon Wireless over to At&t for the new 3G iPhone. But I've also been looking around for deals on an original iPhone. Everything I've seen online still shows prices in excess of $300.

My reasoning is to unlock the original, but leave the 3G alone regardless of the unlocking possibilities. I don't want to void my warranty.

So my question is: With the release of the new 3G version on the 11th, will the price of the original drop? And if so, by how much do you THINK? Or would the demand stay high for awhile because of its "unlockability"

Thanks so much for any help.

This has been discussed time and time again.

Searches have resulted in nothing substantial. I haven't seen anything discussed about the price online dropping.

Either way, I greatly appreciate you taking the time to contribute such a helpful response.

Nobody knows and nobody can answer this question for you.

For example, who would have thought that an unlocked 16 GB would hit as high as 800-900 on ebay. Especially since unlocking is as easy as 1-2-3, but go figure.

It can easily drop or raise when the new one comes out. Nobody knows. But here's a few things to go on, if the new 3G one can be unlocked then the edge version will be worthless. If it cannot, then I think the prices will go up. More so for those that don't have 3G where they live. But this is just my guess.

This is a reasonable response:

Not really in the near future. The 3G model will be costly to buy (after ETF, activation fees and a month's service), that will keep first gen's value high.
Add the fact that we aren't even sure that 3G model will be unlockable in the near future (we believe that it will sometime, but for reference first gens purchased back in November weren't publicly unlockable for nearly 3 months), and it is easy to see that first gens will be a good deal for the next few months.

Maybe in a few months when the demand of the 3G model goes down, is confirmed to be unlockable, and is circulating the auction/craigslist sector, then the first gens will go down in price.

I have a feeling the "old" iPhone will retain its value. I don't see as many people unlocking the 3G as they did before, what with the forced 2 year contract.

Here's to hoping that they release an Aluminum backed iPhone 3G lol it looks so much better than the plastic

(On a completely pointless side note, can someone please explain how the Bobcats picked Augustin over Jerryd Bayless? )
